What would be your most anticipated sci-fi movie

07/11/2007 6:41 AM

There have been many good sci-fi movies and TV programmes that have left lots of unanswered questions. What would be your most anticipated movie to give you closure on your question, and what is the question?

I think that a good sci fi movie should leave you with a sense that there is an unanswered question at the end?

It leaves the viewer with his own imagination to fill in the answer, that I think is what makes a good film / story etc...

If everything was spelt out then the viewer is just that a viewer and not a participant, which so many films fail to take into consideration.

So I have plenty of questions at the end of a movie, but I don't want to be force fed someone else's answer...

Just my opinion - John.

Cool question, davah. After all these years, I'm still a fan of the old "Land of the Lost" series that aired on Saturday mornings for a couple of years during the 1970s. My question is simple, but obscure if you never saw the show. Did Will, Holly and Uncle Jack finally escape Altrusia?

Nope, Will, Holly and Uncle Jack are locked in time - if you recall the begining of each show it depicts (in addition to the "sleestak") the group being caught in a time rift and no matter what they do (unlike ST-TNG who always manages to beat time) they cannot return and are unaware of their dilemma.

Interesting show - but I did enjoy the issues presented in Star Trek - TNG, always looked at things from the perspective of the prime directive. Whether they aggreed or not.

I'm looking forward to the next Star Trek movie. The question is "why can't we get enough of Star Trek?"

I'd love to see some of the Larry Niven books adapted. Ringworld, Footfall, Lucifer's Hammer, all would make great movies.

The technology would need a an update but the story line was excellent. What about Asimov's Foundation, I always wondered about Gia. Or was that part if I A Robot? Rats must be losing it.

I agree 100%. However, I would hate to see Hollywood ruin them.

Thats true, maybe Peter Jackson would treat them with the same respect as Lord of the Rings.

I loved the book, and the movie. You can't compare them, but I think the movie stands on its own. Better than Lost in Space.

Personally I would like to see "The Mote in God's Eye" turned into a move, but I think that would be a tough task. Anybody have any experience in writing a screenplay?

History, science fantasy and children's stories if that's any good, what do you have in mind?

Yes, I have experience writing screenplays -- haven't read "The Mote in God's Eye". Am busy hanging from bridge superstructures these days, but intrigued by the idea, especially since current playmate just finished CGI work on "Transformers" at ILM in SF. Can I get the book on CD to listen to while I'm working nights?

Would like to see a screen play of Philp K. Dick's...."The Pre-Persons"....just to see the heated exchanges and the sparks fly in the MSM. The story is loaded with social commentary and explores what could happen if ideas are taken to their logical extremes.

Two of Dick's other concepts did well at the cinema, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner, one of my favs), and "We Can Remember It For you Wholesale" (Total Recall, staring Arnie S, could have been better)

When David Gerrold wrote "The Trouble With Tribbles", he took a lot of sensible advise from professionals in the business. One of the gems of wisdom was that most books rarely translate well to the big (or small!) screen because the timing is off. For example...in a screenplay, you have to get two minor crises and a denoument all in 20 minutes. This gives time for commercials. Throw in actors who are sometimes slow of speech (Jimmy Stewart) or quick and sharp (Ricardo Mantabahn) and your dialogue will need modification after modification in order to fit it into the available windows. Nobody would argue that Robert Heinlein was one of the greats of SF, but even he wrote (in "Grumbles from the Grave") that "Red Planet" was the most difficult job he had ever done, and that basically, even he agreed that it sucked.

Jackson combined two key characters, dumped whole chapters of dialogue, and included much new stuff to make a rattlin' good story. However true fans of Tolkein's books think he butchered it. The end result was delightful, but would the author aprove? Hmmm.

I would like to see more of Gibson's stuff get onto the big screen. Johnny Mneumonic was actually not so bad, though it suffered from over writing and insufficient back story,(and ninjas.....always a Bad Thing!) which turned the critics off, but other short stories, almost any in the collection "Burning Chrome" would go up well as a movie.

Most movies have only one premise, a couple of conflicts, and they provide a vehicle for the actor....say...any of Angelina Jolie, Bruce Willis's or Arnie's movies. Very few movies would work if you changed out the lead. Most SF is about concept, "What would Happen If", not about witty dialogue, about cool things happening instead of helicopters being blown up, and therefore, MOST Science Fiction will not make a good movie. Good SF movies..pretty thin on the ground! A Clockwork Orange, 2001 a Space Odessy, Silent Running. Bad ones...too numerous to mention!

Not a bad plot for science fiction movie. Maybe a little too complicated and far fetched though. Wonder what you would have to do to make this concept believable. There was something like that in "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, and "THX 1131". Both rattlin' good fiction, but suffered from low budget and piss poor editing.
