Inventions of Our Time

Posted November 16, 2009 8:20 AM

We're living in an era where the pace of change seems fast - and accelerating. But each generation has had its great innovations. Radios, LP records, and medical devices changed our lives dramatically after their introduction. Cell phones and the Internet are more recent revolutionary inventions. What technological innovations changed your life the most, or do you rank among the greatest? Do you see any on the horizon?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Mechanical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Mechanical Components today.

Well, I tell yah, a battery powered powerful screw gun, as far as a day to day tool, has had terrific influence on my life.

I first used a Makita for film work which had prior been done using hammers and double headed nails designed to be temporary.

My definition of Great Things is sometimes those things that seem as if they have always been there.

-Like "What do mean men didn't know how to start fires or have wheels and wagons?"

Powerful battery powered nail guns and saws and nut conforming socket wrenches mean one can do more right with less.

Exoskeletons will become part of material handling as common, if not more than forklifts.

(Got any friends at a Forklift company, and get them to hire me, and I'll give you whatever the standard finders fee is, depends whether you take a buyout, or get some as long as I do well.)

We are in a unique time partly because all that is great has reached certain levels of maturity.

Trick now is to bring them all together to get through what Jared Diamond called "the bottleneck'.

I was born in 1952, and by then the Atom Bomb had been created, jetplanes, rockets, computers, telephones antibiotics, vaccines, TV, Movies and on, and on.

But hey, I never had my hands on a screwgun till the late 80s, and they are terrific.

Is it me, or does Transcendian talk a different language?

Might have a chance to agree with something he says if only I could understand it!

I'll try that, Del.

I really do rate his signature, though.

Latest inventions in communication technologies have made the planet earth as a global village. Next generations can cross the boundaries of the countries with out any passport. May be we need passport tot ravel to other planets. Artificial Intelligence, imaging, nano technologies are few potential areas which are going to change the life style of next generation.

Movies and Television. Worst inventions of our time. Time wasters for the most part and the influencing characteristics from the misinformation and manipulation through emotionally charged presentations do have their incremental effects on society. What greater tool has influenced our latest generation from the daunting exploitations of MTV to horrific changes in graphic death scenes recognized as "entertainment". Desensitization to the other realities of human degradations allow for an incremental increase in the physical manifestations of those processes.

Although public television programing and many decent tutorials or documentaries leave a better impression on the psyche and even tantalize creativity, the mass population is viewing emotionally charged programing. The influence it has now in our society in this electronic/communications age as apposed to the influences during the industrial age a mere century ago, is significant to the type of inventions being developed now. The new generation is learning only whats been influenced by televisions society not community and family. (positive community and family influence any way) (BTW I'm NOT a fundamentalist, but boy is it sounding like it)

Strange how the new revival is back to utilizing earths abundance of natural resources. Making more efficient use of these natural or even man made resources is what its all about now. Wind mills making electricity and pulling water out of the ground? What a concept. I don't feel that marked ideas are being developed as once was with the development of Electricity, light, spanning bridges across miles of water and other massive architectural and science developments.

Our modern inventions are ever so incremental in advancement as apposed to monumental but now all revolving around pre existing ideas. Now built or designed more efficiently or with better materials. In the days of Dick Tracy those ideas are already here and hurray for the quick developments, but I'm waiting to be able to be transported from one place to another or to travel back in time. I think that would be a very significant development. (a quantum system existing in two "states" at once doesn't count)

Then there are the significant ideas and inventions that will never see the light of day, or any kind of market. Or the inventions that can have a significant impact on society(s) but due to lack of funding, no interest as it may not provide sufficient income (or it effects some other companies income) the many politics, and the list goes on.. those may never be a reality.

Non-the-less, it is where it is, and the worlds technology is moving at the rate seemingly limited by those who are in power of their development and utilization. Either political or personal, the details to "why" are immense.

Technology inventions are meant for a service , process or an activity. The visual, audio and waves communications certainly have the at most impacts and benefits to all of us. Television as the very name implies gives the feasibility of seeing tele visions. The commercial exploitation part is based on mass options and certain class and age groups are fantasied about odd options. Exaggerated presentations do affect the mental make up of viewers , the reason being total concentration focus and involvement of all physical and mental senses. This temporary relaxation rather had addiction ed tendency and influencing behavioural traits and destructive instincts.

Even if television is absent, people will get buried into FICTIONS and favourite topic novels. Such an addition is the result of seeking escapism from reality world or keeping away from duties.

Regulatory authorities like SENSOR boards have a deep bound responsibility aimed at ethical aspects of society.

Too much of freedom and liberalization are likely to spoil society.

It is all the up to the ethical choice of the user and certainly not the invention[ Most of the inventions are aimed at a positive benefit]. Smart users invent new exploitations of their choice.

Human mind is always curious and will keep trying for solutions and possibilities for their longings, the capability of the DNA.

The issue of negative exploitation is connected to ethical levels and choice of users.

I donno.. I'm pretty sure the Romans cornered the market on unwholesome entertainment.

Lions eating people in real life is a bit more of a nasty entertainment than the fantasy violence on TV or in the movies. After all, on TV, the lion probably really didn't eat you. Sting rays on the other hand might cause problems.

Humans are endlessly fascinated with the art of bloodletting. TV did not create that situation.

My personal technological advancement is toilet paper. Disagree? Imagine your life without it. Especially after a couple bean burritos.

Traces of cannibalism still persist in human bloods it seems. It is true, there is quite a deal of interest and curiosity in people to see others fighting, win / lose games, a similarity exists in sports watching also. Fighting wars, fighting for survival, fighting for resources and political spots.

With so much abundant resources, that nature is open to all beings without the slightest resistance, the magnanimity of nature, the very inspiration for humans in all walks of life, should reflect in our behavioural traits also.

Education, social and ethical values of humanity manifested in positive spirits without greedy and selfish pursuits should make EARTH a glorious HEAVEN to all beings concerned. The goals of UNITED NATIONS organization hold such values which should come into practical realities.

It is all about how humans think or want to derive and accomplish out of life .
