Should Bloggers' Free Speech be Protected?

Posted December 28, 2009 8:14 AM

The issue of net neutrality is the result of perceived infringements of free speech. Governments across the world block access to Web sites in an effort to prevent broad audiences from reading what other people have written. Massive cyber attacks have silenced voices on social media sites. In many cases, those silencing these voices claim to protect a greater good or claim the right to manage networks. When does free speech become irresponsible or dangerous? Should bloggers' free speech be absolute or limited?

Should bloggers' free speech be absolute or limited?

If it's limited, then it isn't free speech anymore now is it?

Surprised this is even a question, but not every country has a 1st Amendment equivalent, so maybe that's why it's being asked here in this global forum. An odd question from my American perspective. Someday, in the beautiful future, the U.N. will ratify universal free speech. The right to be cranky and complain about my elected officials was my birthright back in 1966 when I was born in Troy, New York - Uncle Sam's home town. It makes not being the world's number one economy anymore a lot easier to deal with. Look at what Internet free speech has done to improve democracy in Burma and other oppressive places around the world! "Bloggers" - the good ones - are today's newspaper reporters, and deserve the same protections. - Larry
