The Future Internet

Posted January 23, 2010 7:59 AM

A recent article in Network World makes 10 predictions about what the Internet will be like in the year 2020. Some of them are no-brainers, such as: "more people will use the Internet" than do so today; it will be more geographically dispersed; and it'll attract more hackers. Others might be less expected: that the Internet will be wireless; and it won't rely on always-on connectivity. What's your reaction to the ten predictions? And do you have some predictions of your own?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

Encryption will be the norm rather than the exception.

90% of the traffic/bandwidth will still be taken up by spam, illegal activities, and security efforts.

There will also need to be a group "users anonymouse". This will be the biggest "self help" group in the world.

This will be for those addicts that spend either too much time or money on the internet (and other communication networks) just to stay in touch.

The internet is a great tool for humanity, but how much of the capacity that it provides is anything more than entertainment for the masses?

We have gamblers anonymous, alcoholics anonymous, quit smoking campaigns, and eventually we will realise there are some who excessively dedicate their time and focus to the entertainment that the net provides while making very little use of their time and skills to interact with their own family.

I also suspect that it won't be 90% taken up with adverts/encription/spam, it will be more like 99.99%. Imagine how much "greener" the whole system would be if we could eliminate that @#@$#$% from the system.

Finally, maybe the system would be "free to air". Why do I have to pay my subscription to then have bandwidth and download allowances taken up by uninvited material. That's like asking me to pay postage for the junk mail in the letterbox. (My pet hate.)

I see cars somehow connected to the WWW all the time and communications being realtime while the auto is being controlled by a traffic system interconnected to the road and all autos while the passengers conduct business and enjoy entertainment.

or...spam will be eliminated.

In Australia - if Sen Conroy gets his way - we will only get to see 'The Wiggles' web site.

I predict that we will be inundated with multiple-page publications from the Department of the Painfully Obvious - just like this one.

Heck, I'm a metal-bender by trade and I could have written this. Let's see an article where someone sticks their neck out!
