Google Camera Helps Nab Alleged Tree Killers

Posted February 02, 2010 8:06 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

Forget about all of those ubiquitous police surveillance cameras in your city: the new sheriff in town is that shifty Google Maps camera wheeling through your neighborhood. Recently, a property owner in Canada was charged with illegal removal of trees after a Google camera helped capture the evidence, according to CanWest News Service.

The worst part of this is the laws that prohibit property owners from enjoying their property in a reasonable fashion.

I love trees. I have many old growth oak and messy tulip poplars on my small parcel and I appreciate the shade they provide for my house in the hot summers. However, if someone would rather have more sunshine and openess, that should be their choice. I understand that trees have many benefits but we are subrogating our liberties to the nanny state.

Though its a zoning issue voted by voters, which isn't bad, they did got a permit, but only could cut down a few. If that was the case. The local government should compensate the property owners valuation difference for retaining the rest of the trees. Look at the property tax base it would increase due to the value increase

It is a case of government knows best for the individual, even local government.

Having 23 trees that could be removed is excessive for that property. He should have been ordered to remove some.

The original planter was also at fault by spacing the trees that closely.

I cant find the direction on the photo but the shade indicates that the neighbour did also benefit from the removal.

Big trees near houses are also a nuisance. There were a thread of a big trunk that fell on a house of one of a CR4 member during a storm or a hurricane. The people of OZ will also confirm the fire hazard of those trees.

Finally if it were my property I would also opt for removing the lot and start planning with a clean slate.

Common landscaping mistake, They plant on what looks good at the time of the planting, and not when the trees/shrubs mature.

Big trees near houses are also a nuisance.

Good point, As well as sewers and sidewalks
