The Engineer's Notebook Blog

The Engineer's Notebook

The Engineer's Notebook is a shared blog for entries that don't fit into a specific CR4 blog. Topics may range from grammar to physics and could be research or or an individual's thoughts - like you'd jot down in a well-used notebook.

Watch CR4news on YouTube

Posted February 16, 2010 12:01 AM by Steve Melito

Have you ever wondered what some of your favorite CR4 bloggers look like? How about the way that they sound? Do they have fun at work? And considering that CR4 never sleeps, do the bloggers get out of the office much?

The answers you seek are on YouTube, my friend. Since last summer, CR4 has been quietly uploading videos to its CR4news channel there. With 21 videos now in place, it's time to share this secret with you. So what's there to watch?

How-To Videos

555 Timer with LED

Learn basic electronics with Jaxy. This video, which features a 555 timer chip with an LED, even explains how to make the LED blink.

555 Timer with a Speaker

Jaxy explains how build a 555 timer so that you can hear the frequency it's emitting. Great for beginners.

Popcorn Hour C-200 Mod – Blue-ray Drive and 3.5" Hard Drive

TeknologikL shows you how to modify your Popcorn Hour C-200 to install a Blu-ray optical disc drive and a 3.5" desktop hard drive. Very cool.

The host of Katie's Controversies shows why her YouTube interview has the most views.

Larry Kelley

Meet a mechanical engineer with a sense of history and an eye for design.

John Loz

Take a ride with CR4's streetcar specialist, a true student of urban planning.

Troublesome Trebuchet

Watch the CR4 crew set up a homemade trebuchet and learn how not to launch pumpkins, water balloons, and sir launch-a-lot.

Trebuchet Pumpkin Chucking

If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Yes, we got it right this time.

Video Spy Plane on the Cheap

Check out CR4's camera plane as it flies above the RPI Tech Park in Troy, New York.

DIY Model Rocket Engine

Watch us launch a model rocket with a homemade solid-fuel engine. Don't try this at home!

Ballooning

This rather random video was probably made by a blogger battling writer's block.

Lateral Undulation

Snakes do what birds and bees don't. Vi Pham's video depicts lateral undulation first with well-defined fixed points and then with many undefined fixed points.

Happy Holidays from CR4

The holidays may be over, but you can still enjoy these festive lights timed to music.

Robo Conductor Leads CR4's Holiday Symphony

Some CR4 bloggers sure had some fun last December. Here, they've programmed a robotic conductor to lead their holiday symphony of light and sound.

Road Trips

Technological Pleasure Dome

Join CR4 on a tour of the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY. The New York Times describes this bold new concert hall as a "technological pleasure dome for the mind and senses".

Join us on a tour of the Mechanicville Hydroelectric Station in upstate New York. Then learn about the station's pioneering hydro-generator designer, Charles Steinmetz, from CR4's own april05.

Alas, about half the links were broken. Do YouTube videos normally expire that quickly?

Thanks for catching this, Tornado. I'm hoping that YouTube URLs don't expire that quickly, but that may be the case. (I'll research this to be sure).

At any rate, I just updated the links so that all of the videos now work.

Keep at it.
