High-Tech Mouse Trap

Posted February 09, 2007 7:02 AM

From TechEBlog:

Though not very practical, this high-tech mouse trap is still an interesting creation nonetheless. Here's how it works: This project captures a mouse by having a solenoid (electromagnet) drop a bucket over the mouse. The bucket is triggered by the mouse interrupting one of the infrared emitter/detector pairs around the bait. The enclosure that holds the electronics is mounted directly over the bait. Ok, so the "bucket" is actually a semi-clear storage container. The clear container allows a person to see if a mouse was trapped when the container dropped

At least the poor little creature survives to see another day.

The steam-powered tea-stirring machine fits into the same category as the posted device...

I bought one and I soon noticed that it had something inside it. I went to release the captive and I was shocked, literally shocked, as it was a high tech mouse and he had a little taser (to discourage cats, I expect) and as I went back on my heels I heard a digital data to speech voice say..."up up and away" and his jet back pack took him out of right...

A trap consisting in a bait to attract the delinquent and an iron cage that suddenly falls. Tell me if some companies are planning to produce traps to attract and detain delinquents. I put the bait.

The approach is technologically too simple! Rube Goldberg (a real person, who graduated from the academic-prep Lowell High School in San Francisco CA about 100 years ago) became famous for his cartoons which lampooned technology. We need to add a few steps to the system, to allow for the energy it consumes, the need to raise the container back up, etc.

Let's add a pressure sensitive panel which will raise the trap when the cat comes along to see what all the commotion is about.

Also... I believe I read somewhere that all of Rube Goldberg's devices were quite workable. If one were so tempted to build such devices.
