Manure: You May Be Walking on It Soon

Posted February 12, 2007 2:20 PM

From Discovery News:

Feb. 12, 2007 — Home-buyers of tomorrow could find themselves walking across floors made from manure. Researchers at Michigan State University and the U.S.Department of Agriculture insist it's no cow pie in the sky dream. They say that fiber from processed and sterilized cow manure could take the place of sawdust in making fiberboard, which is used to make everything from furniture to flooring to store shelves. And the resulting product smells just fine. The researchers hope it could be part of the solution to the nation's 1.5-trillion- to 2-trillion pound annual farm waste disposal problem.

Whats new?

years ago people stabilized their dirt floors with a thin layer of cow manure.

Why?

If manure which bio-degrades by natural processes is taken out of the system, the positive results ie. fertilization will have to be replaced by an artificial method.

The manure should rather be allowed to degrade naturally and used to produce crops or fodder.

No big surprise I've been stepping in it for years. It also make a very good fuel source as well. Processing could also yield methane?

1.5 to 2 trillonn pounds of manure! That is a LOT of sh.. There has to be a way to use this as a fuel source instead of wasting energy on processing it to turn it into something to replace an existing, cost effective, and renewable resource. Yo! Michigan state, Yo! USDA, quit wsting tax payers money by researching ways to turn cow turds into something to walk on and spend that money on finding a way to burn them in my Honda!

Sounds like a crappy job, but hey somebodys got to do it. Maybe we could get the gut from "Dirty Jobs" to do a story on it. Sounds like another wasted tax payer funded effort into meanlingness poo. Spread it back on the cropland as fertilizer. it was designed as that in the first place. Bigger problems to solve.
