What's Your Least Favorite Driving Habit?

Posted May 28, 2010 12:01 AM by CarDomain

Let's forget for a moment that we're probably not as good behind the wheel as we think we are - and focus instead on other people's failings. For my part, I'm constantly monitoring the cars around me on the road for what I call "lane selection fail" – the idea on the part of some drivers that those dotted white lines somehow don't apply to them.

It seems that the number of drivers who attempt to merge into my ride on a daily basis has been compounded by the growing percentage of people who are twiddling on their cell phones while simultaneously attempting to drive. So I consider it a necessity to remain ultra-vigilant against lane-wanderers, though it still bugs me every time I see people who are apparently too distracted or too important to stay in their own lane and not cause a wreck. I mean, how difficult is it, really?

How about you? What's your biggest traffic pet peeve, or the habit that bugs you most when you see it in other drivers?

Well there is no point in driving at 80-90 mph in the "slow" lane, unless you have the road to yourself. On a busy freeway you will constantly be having to overtake slower vehicles by lane changing. So the logical move is to stay in the next lane over. I'm sure that's not too hard to understand - people do it all the time. Having lived in So. California, I found that there is an evil minority that decided that "undertaking" you in the slow lane gets them results and they do this habitually. I can't tell you the number of times I've been driving in the second-from-right lane at ~70 mph, while approaching a slow moving truck in the right lane. The nutters come roaring up inside lane in an attempt to shoot through the rapidly closing gap between me and the truck. At times the the manoevre is seemingly "impossible," yet they do it - and no doubt think they are the greatest - not knowing, or perhaps not caring, that they and I, could be 0.1 second away from instant death. I have seen several vehicles embedded in the back of big trucks - possibly they were some of these miscreants. On one occasion it was a motocyclist who went under the truck and left his entire leg in the next lane, complete with trouser leg and shoe. It was an utterly sickening sight, I saw the ashen faced truck driver vomitting. But within seconds, everyone was "off to the races" again. We don't live there anymore. I needn't tell you why.

Funny how people tend to try to drive faster in congested traffic than when it is a clear open road.

I always try to pass on the left if that lane is available and open. I also alway go right when I am done my pass unless there is a second or third vehicle that is traveling as part of a group that I am passing.

I will pass on the right if the left lane is blocked or someone is just hanging there clueless.

I think that many just go to the left lane as a matter of convenience because they never have to lane change again until they need to exit. Others just figure that they are going fast enough to qualify them as ownership of that lane permanently. However, there is no excuse for remaining in the left lane when you are done your pass and there is plenty of room for you in the right lane.

Undertaking as you've termed it is legal on multiple lane highways in the US unless posted otherwise; what's the rub but slow down one or two mph to allow those moonbats to get by If they had the IQ of a turnip they would be Einsteins amoungst their peers.

Motorcycles are a fine example of Darwin in action. If I had MY way, every boy would be issued with a motorcycle at 16, and the survivors would be allowed to write for a licence to drive multi wheel motor vehicles a year or so later.

I usually find that if you survive a year on a bike, then you will probably die in bed as an old man because you learn good habits. Unfortunately for families, but fortunately for the human species in general, there WILL be casualties. At least on a motorcycle, you tend to only kill yourself, and not others.

As for driving in California or Montreal (or for that matter, the autobahn) the drivers have long ago sorted themselves out between the smart and the dead.

Does parking count? I find it really rude that people pull into parking spaces in all sorts of misaligned ways which preclude a vehicle from parking next to them because it's so close no one could get out of the car on that (close) side.

I was visiting a hospital the other day and a large (red-neck-type) truck was parked in such a way as to take up 4 spaces! It did appear that someone gave them a ticket of sorts (can hospitals do that??). I couldn't help it. I added a note to the ticket to let the driver know that not just some authority had a problem with what they had done. This particular hospital doesn't have enough parking space, as it is, for visitors. People have to park along the adjoining roads and a parking lot "annex" that is quite a ways from the hospital.

well to be very honest i will not talk about others' mistakes which annoy me while driving. i am going to share my shortcomming here. i drive when i am drunk and stop the car anywhere when i feel that it is crossing the safety limits. few months back i hired a rental car to attend a dinner in San Francisco. same thing happened ,on my way to home i was unable to control the car.it was my good luck that before going to a sound sleep i called the SFO limo service. a chauffer was sent who brought me home and took the car back. i feel ashamed of this attitude and want to change it seriously.
