Is Your Copier a Security Leak?

Posted June 15, 2010 7:47 AM

Most new copiers include a hard drive, so that they can handle a document only once, no matter how many copies you want. But the hard drives retain information on virtually every copy they have ever made. Retiring or disposing of such copiers without first removing that information is a recipe for disaster. Do you treat your copier as a security leak? How does your company dispose of old copiers? How do you dispose of the internal hard drives? What additional steps could you take? Should you take?

Oh damn, somebody spilled the beans. My favorite technique of industrial sabotage is pick old copiers out of dumpsters and milk them for all they're worth. Managers should really worry about this. (More patootie pix than you can shake a stick at.)

Yawn...This is old news. It has been known for several years copiers are security risks. If the copier is networked also. The hard drive can be accessed that way also. What the manf's should have done is made it known how to either remove the HD or have some method of overwrite HD after the copies have been made or faxes have been sent.
