A Kitchen Countertop with a Brain

Posted July 02, 2010 10:25 AM

From Technology Review RSS Feeds:

When Ryder Ziola places a bell pepper on the kitchen work surface in front of him, the tabletop springs to life, suggesting recipes and other information. He can also use the work surface like a touch screen, selecting options with a finger--to see, for example, what ingredients might go well with his pepper. Ziola, a graduate student at the University of Washington, developed the system, dubbed Oasis, with researchers at Intel Labs Seattle led by senior scientist Beverly Harrison. Ziola is demonstrating Oasis at the ninth annual Intel Research Day, held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA.

I wonder what recipes it will give when the cat jumps onto the counter?

Several Asian goodies, no doubt. But unless you're multilingual, you won't understand them.

Heading out of Seattle toward Enumclaw (Hwy 410) you can pass by the Manfred Vierthaler restaurant/winery. Their menu has included wild boar, lion, and hippopotamus. Where they get those, I don't know. Maybe we could ask this countertop?

Once upon a time I did some refrigeration work at a mink farm. Somehow those guys had scored a beached whale carcass, which the minks kept munching on, encountering relatively fresh meat as they went along. (That would be "relative" to their standards versus stench-avoiding standards.)

Exotic dishes that the cat would want us to serve to it and that are better than what we would all be satisfied eating no doubt.

I'd program it to make the sound of a squirt gun. A sound my cat knows and fears.

I could see this getting very annoying after a while.

Then again it would be good for those people without a brain.

When I dare venture into the kitchen to "fend for myself", I already have in mind what I want to prepare. Lets face it there are only so many variations you can do with preparing baked beans on toast with melted cheese on top. Adding variegated asparagus spears and anchovies in olive oil, is not one of them...

What if you leave crumbs, will it nag you...?
'wipe the counter'...
'Put the lid back on the marmalade'...
'Put that mug in the dishwasher'....
'Take that engine block back into the garage'.
