Are "Bait Bikes" Simply Entrapment?

Posted July 06, 2010 7:48 AM

From TreeHugger:

Lloyd reported back in 2007 that the City of Toronto was using bait bikes fitted with GPS to trap would-be bike thieves. Apparently the idea is catching on, and London is now following suit. In fact, British police are going to be deploying bait bikes across the country after a series of successful trials cut theft rates by as much as 45%. All well and good, you might think, but it seems some people are concerned this tactic amounts to entrapment.

If it's not yours, don't take it. Very simple.

As for entrapment, well...SEE MY FIRST COMMENT!

And as far as the whiners complaining about these poor drug addicts just out of rehab seeing a bike that's not locked up and just having to steal it for a quick high...I guess you guys in rehab aren't doing your jobs very well.

Just another case of the criminal being the sad victim of a cruel society.

I suppose that if there were no law enforcement and no laws then there would be no crime. Would you like to live and raise your children in that world?

Once they figure out how to quickly disable the GPS units, a gang will deliberately steal the bikes, remove the GPS devices and sell the bikes. Probably sell the GPS units, too. And the city taxpayers will be out the cost of the bikes, the GPS units and the manpower costs spent on this project.

There is a very old saying. A lock is a way of keeping an honest man honest. For a dishonest man, there is no lock or security feature that cannot be defeated. I have seen chains cut, windows shattered or removed, doors taken right off their mountings, and so forth.

If there is any one thing in this world that I hate, it's thieves. I say more power to the men and women of the Toronto PD and Scotland Yard!

As for deactivating, removing and selling the GPS trackers, that kind of depends upon how sophisticated the thieves are and where the GPS is hidden on the bike. For example, if the unit is hidden inside the frame itself, then the bad guys would need detection gear they are unlikely to have and would have to cut the bike up to remove the unit. Not impossible, but for the level of effort and investment, they might as well be making an honest living.

Just some additions to the bike:

Superglue excreting handlebars and seat, should solve the in court wassa-me problems.

Don't worry about removing the saddle or the handlebars, just un-clip the bike and refit new bars and saddle, to reset the trap. Be interesting to see how society reacts to the culprits with a nice shiny set of handlebars between his thieving hands and a bicycle saddle stuck to his bum.

Remove the GPS, fit semtex.
Actually my Daught' found a nice mountain bike it was dumped in the middle of a brook in the woods.
She bought it home and cleaned it up. She gave a description to the police who said if it wasn't claimed it was hers (in 30 days or somesuch).
I think the police were rather irritated by being disturbed for such trivia, but I though it showed good initiative..except we've got another damn bike cluttering up the yard.
Del <hmmm maybe I should steal it and throw it in the brook?>
