Steel Velcro - New Metallic Hook And Loop Fastener

Posted July 23, 2010 6:00 AM by Milo

Rethinking connecting!

We just learned of this prize-winning development. Researchers at Technical University of Munich, Germany have developed "Steel Velcro: which they claim can hold 35 tonnes per square meter of fastener and hold at temperatures up to 800º C.

Metal fastener, rethought.

Of course, just like "ordinary" Velcro, it can be opened up without specialised tools and used again. This product is called Metaklett.

The Metaklett fastening material is made from perforated spring steel strips 0.2 millimetres thick, one kind bristling with springy steel brushes and the other sporting jagged spikes.

We think that this innovation will be useful for machine assembly and for holding things in hot and oily conditions. Especially where there is a high frequency of opening and closing whatever is being secured. Resistance to high temperatures and chemicals could also make this an important development in medical field. Metaklett is basically suitable for use in all areas that require easily opened but stable fasteners, for example air-conditioning and ventilation systems in building services engineering and automotive construction.

Of course, the strength of the connection depends on the direction of the force applied. Applied 90-degrees to the strips, the holding force is said to be about 7 tonnes. The strength of the adhesion diminishes after the first couple openings and closings then stabilizes.

I can see the engineers and designers at NASA and Boeing flying to Munich to get their hands on this.

Congratulations to the team at TU Munich, for their prize winning "rethink of connecting."

Where would you use this in your shop?

I may try this at the fabrication tables... maybe this will keep the guys at their workstations.

As I consider further, the boss might want some for my seat as well!

This is not that new of an idea, Farm kids world wide have played with wool cards and window screen for many decades. Someone just found a way to make it work better.

For those who do not know what a wool card is:

Hello farmatt, lynlynch, milo, and everyone else.

Well, after my initial smartacre comment, I reviewed the datasheet links milo gave us. I am a little less impressed than I thought I would be:

Still, pretty cool. New stuff always finds a niche somewhere. Thanks again, milo.

I'm thinking what a great electrical connector this could make as well.

How many AMPS per square thingy can it conduct?

How about introducing magnetism into this coupling? Will yield be a positive or negative on the joint? magnetism during engagement, holding and disengagement!

That might be a good idea.

You know what isn't a good idea? Using velcro that sticks to a surface by an adhesive. You will find that the velcro is stronger than the adhesive and when you pull them apart the whole thing will come off and the velcro will hold together. You will find that when you pull the velcro apart you'll only pull the other side off from the surface it is stuck to and the velcro will still hold together.

The manufacturers need to do something else for adhesive or you're just going to have to rely on just sewing the velcro to the surfaces you want to apply them.

Such things are of interest to Grips in Hollywood.

There's been stainless steel hook and loop (velcro) available at McMaster-Carr for some time now. Not as strong as this stuff though, I'm sure.

Glad you all found this interesting.

I just got back from a meeting with the feds on a manufacturing issue.

So thanks for the comments!
