Beijing has very horrible traffic in the best of times. Westerners think of all these Chinese riding their bicycles around filling up the streets. Guess what! These same people now all have cars. You get your car, and pay your yuan to get it licensed, and GO. This is a city where I would not even consider driving. Even walking... If you are trying to cross the street and there is room enough for a car in front of you, someone will take the corner. It makes one a bit nervous having a car go by you 3 inches away from your body.

In Shanghai, traffic is much more reasonable BUT They only issue so many vehicle licenses per year, and if I remember right, these licenses are sold by auction. Thus only those with the big bucks get them.
