Another Technological Paradigm Shift?

Posted August 28, 2010 8:13 AM

Every time you turn around, someone claims that a new technology represents a revolution. The latest salvo heralds the coming of zero-capacitance RAMs (Z-RAMs), denser and less-expensive alternatives to conventional DRAMs, as a seismic shift. But not all such highly touted innovations have lived up to their early promise. How much difference do you think Z-RAM introduction will make to future electronic products? What will we be able to do that we can't do with DRAMs? Will you be incorporating the new devices into your products? How?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Semiconductor & MEMS Fabrication, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Semiconductor & MEMS Fabrication today.

I don't know anything about that Z-RAM, DRAM stuff, but I am convinced about one thing:

I'm going to stop turning around. All these revolutions are making me dizzy.

I am still waiting for someone to invent streamlined and efficient software programing so I don't need 4 Gig of what ever RAM I have and how many Ghz of processor speed I have just to keep my system up and running just for basic online work.

The new Z-ram may be a great jump forward for something but unfortunately so far pointless software bloating is still leading the pack on all fronts and no one seems to be concerned about trimming that fat off any time soon.
