Cell Phone 'Time Traveler' Spotted in Silent Film

Posted October 29, 2010 8:52 AM

From CNN.com - Technology:

It's not shocking to see a woman talking on her cell phone while walking down the street. It is, however, shocking when the woman is an extra in a silent film from 1928. Charlie Chaplin's "The Circus" is getting internet buzz with a clip from the black-and-white comedy spreading at viral speed.

If it is a time traveler using a cell phone, what cell tower are they connected to? I wasn't aware of any in existence in 1928.

JBTardis,

There you go, confusing the issue with logic and reality.

If time travel is possible then timeline to timeline communications would also be possible.

Or its a very early experimental walkie talkie type device that works locally with another device.

Or its just a prop from some long lost sci fi silent film and the extra is just playing with it. In the early 1900's imagining the devices they had then working without cords is not all that difficult of a stretch of the imagination. It sort of like imagining our communications tech we have now as being implants or direct brain connected devices. Not possible now but still not too hard to imagine!

That's my vote for GA.

Simply because time travel isn't possible today, it doesn't rule out that time travel is not possible at some future date.

I wouldn't expect a time traveling visitor from anywhere else but the future, would you?

(Although, I do know that this idea has been chewed on by the best scientific minds in the World since the dawn of civilization. Newton obviously didn't crack the code or he'd be here today.)

Who's to say that some engineer, some day, won't make some lucky blunder and discover the key to the doorway in time?

Charlie Chaplin was far ahead of his time. When I get the kinks worked out of my time machine, maybe I'll drop by and pay him a visit.

If I can get the damn thing to finally work, I'll give you a call when I get there.

Far as I understand the physics the problem with time travel, while possible, creates another universe that never again can intersect.

Jorrie is a good one to check with as far as the science is concerned.

It is a strange aspect of the shared experiences of communicating humans that they do a lemming dance, or Ghost Dance.

City Lights is a great movie, and the films of Charlie Chaplin are right up there with Shakespeare far as my money is concerned. If looking for time travelers causes people to watch the great films of Charlie Chaplin, then I am for the madness.

This is a case of limited use of the grey matter between the ears. You see someone with their hand to their ear and the first thing someone thinks of fitting the scene to a modern day context - cell phone or is that an iPod?

More likely she was going to the doctor with an earache than phoning in an appointment.

I can't even see that because the video has CNN and some other moronic text on the screen hiding the person's face.

I still believe that this is a case of reading too much into this.

A much, much more plausible explanation is cited HERE.

While I love the romance of time travel, there is nothing to date that supports the notion that we have experienced it beyond the realm of science fiction and the original film does nothing to change that.

...hasn't anybody ever seen an old half-deaf person simply "cup" their hand over their ear when they can't "hear" someone talking to them?

..."What? You talkin' to me?" (wink, wink)

rather odd that a time traveler would not have heard the buzz about this and gotten the time cops all over their a$$ for messing with the timeline. Now that we know time travel is possible massive effort and financial support actually makes it possible.

I discussed my thoughts on this in a different thread, in which I also provided the link to the YouTube video:
