The Recipe for CEO Success

Posted November 13, 2010 7:32 AM

What are the key characteristics of a successful CEO heading an innovative company? Machine Design editor Leland Teschler describes wish list, which includes overconfidence (characterized by how CEOs manage their stock options), and an "unwavering resolve and workmanlike diligence" for getting work done.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pump Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pump Technology today.

In my experience, they have involvement and knowledge in every aspect of the company's busines.

Also, they like to challenge other people, or compete with them.. sorta the same thing. the good ones will respect you for disagreeing with them, and for your great ideas, if you are willing to show a stiff resolve in explaining them.

Are we being a little altruistic ? Some companies would not notice if the board of directors took a 6 month holiday!

you are probably right. My 2 experiences were with small companies that were growing quickly, and the ceo was heavily involved with everything... the board were invisible.. really just paper requirements, or other members like the cfo, working just as hard.

Hi Chris,

And, we accuse the Chinese to steal our patents and other intellectual properties. Many insiders in many companies, sometime from the same family, use by themselves or sold to foreigners technical and technological informations, specific equipment for specific operations and processes to get monetary advantages.

However, everyone who works in one company has the tendency to transfer something from the previous company, good or bad. Sometime, the patented product or process. For that purpose, I hire only people are never worked in the production I am. I learn everything is possible about my production to develop the best method for my business or the company I work, and trasnsfer my knowledgs to others, so I know how they work.

Yes, people who move from a company to another or start their business, they know everything about what, how, when, where, and with who to do the business. However, business ideas are good to take but methods to do things and processes are rare of real value, Gil.

Hi Gil,

I should clarify that the people I'm referring to were not just CEO, but the business founders.
