Is the Public Ill-informed About Foodbourne Illness?

Posted December 09, 2010 7:00 AM

Cable news and talk shows inundate us with an unending variety of information about health and wellness, from the efficacy of hand sanitizers to the dangers of pesticides on food. But are the commentators who propagate these warnings truly experts presenting real scientific data? Can the general public process all the information out there about food recalls and contamination and potential harm and make reasonable decisions?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Food & Beverage Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Food & Beverage Technology today.

I know CR4 should not be a spelling test, but is 'Foodbourne Illness' even the british elegance of the American english Foodborne Illness? (Doorman is guest hosting for Editor Crankshaft today)

Is the public ill-informed about foodborne illness? Probably not. Is the public ignorant about foodborne illness? Yes. Can the general public process all the information out there about food recalls and contamination and potential harm and make reasonable decisions? Reasonable decisions... the public... let me think... hmnmmmm... No, the public cannot make reasonable decisions, and the public needs some sort of big brother to tell them what to do. Our reasonable decision making ability is evidenced (in America) the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November in even numbered years.

That was easy; I didn't even have to say anything....

We do it every year on the same day.

The overindulgers will not learn and get a belly full of anything. They regret but next year its the same. Will they learn? I don't think so, Ky.

It's "food-borne".

There is no truth in the rumour that Foodbourne is then name of a Gordon Ramsay restaurant in Bognor Regis.

Way too many words in the title, how about "IS THE PUBLIC ILL INFORMED"

The answer is yes (and we let them breed). Ffej
