They were the famous tip of a large musical iceberg, an embodyment of the idea that anyone could play in a band or be a "star". Punk at it's best it was full of sly wit, raw energy, a sense of excitement and of being here now, at it's worst it was self indulgent, derivative and co-opted as a fashion statement.
