This week, Ford Motor Company announced that all non-hybrid
cars will be equipped with Start-Stop technology by 2010. Auto Smart-Stop or
idle-stop technology, turns off a car's engine when it comes to a stop. The system
is made up of an enhanced 12-volt car battery and an upgraded starter motor. An
electric pump circulates engine coolant through the heater. When drives put their foot back on the accelerator, the engine
comes back on.
According to Ford, Smart-Stop technology
can improve fuel efficiency between 4-10% without any noticeable differences
for drivers. Testing on different Ford models has already been done in Europe,
where there are stricter emissions and fuel economy standards.
Are you looking forward to Smart-Stop technology?
