Do You Buy Used Auto Parts On-Line?

Posted April 01, 2011 8:45 AM by CarDomain

If you do, you might consider a cautionary tale so that you don't end up like this Porsche owner. Here's his story.

"So I'm driving along the road and I hear a very odd grinding noise. I pull over and two of the spokes on my Kineses f110 wheel are cracked - all the way through. And here I thought that these were bulletproof strong wheels. So I have the car flat-bedded away to a nearby shop. The tire guy comes back to me and says that these wheels have been welded up recently. The seller told me that they had been repainted recently - but that's it. Imagine if I had been driving the car hard and it had busted completely."

Do you buy used auto parts on-line? If so, how do you make sure you're getting a good - and safe - deal?

That doesn't look like a bulletproof wheel to me. Pretty obvious that design places a high priority on the mechanical properties of the construction materials of those spokes. You can put that lightweight stuff into an airplane but you'd better have the level of material specs, certifications and maintenance customary for that application. To me such extremes only have a place in the most highly engineered and controlled competiton machines. Such nonsence for the street is not just a waste of money; it is stupid. Stupidity is definitely not cool.

I have a 1999 Saab 9-3. So far I have been able to service all problems myself. I buy on line parts but only if I cannot get them from my local autoparts store. I do not like going to the Saab dealer as they are generally 2-3 times the cost. There are a few Saab specific on line stores that I am comfortable with. So far I have not had any issues with part I purchased via the web. I hope my good luck continues

Yes we buy a lot of auto parts online. You must know your sources. Buying repaired alloy rims is an unacceptable risk unless from (again) a known source.

Only a fool would buy used parts on line. Only a total idiot would buy any safety related, used item on line.

I do buy parts online. I almost never buy used parts, and when I do I go to the junkyard and pull them myself. I would never buy used parts online.

I can't promise the same experience, but I've bought quite a few things from these guys. Best prices I've found, parts are correct and here in a couple of days. My experience with them is good enough that I'm not nervous about sharing.
