Ever Had a Good Boss?

Posted April 14, 2011 7:00 AM

A boss can chart the course for your team, help optimize your efforts, and promote your career. Or not. Reflecting back on your career, have you been privileged to work for any great bosses? What qualities did they embody that made your experience enjoyable and the company prosper? Were you inspired to carry these traits forward into subsequent boss and/or employee work experiences?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electrical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electrical Components today.

I've had both, and a range between. Right now my immediate boss is great, but he is new and has not yet plumbed the depths of the upstairs cloud-cuckoo-land.

In my 36 year career, I have had 3 great bosses, 2 were for 11 years, 1 was 2 years.

All others in btwn were lost. My current boss is learning. Only been 2 years, well 1.5 with this guy that took over. So the jury is still out.

I've had good, bad and great. The great ones point you in a direction and get out of the way, only stepping in if they are needed to give course corrections or deflect the garbage from above and outside. They allow you to make mistakes and then to fix them. That takes a person secure in their own abilities (or at least willing to admit their shortcomings). Those bosses tend to be exceeding proud when their people do well.

My immediate boss for about 5 yrs in my 35 yrs career Yes. I got good support & encouragement from top bosses (or boss of my boss) during the rest of the period. I do not know what is wrong with my face, this happened when was very young and repeating through out my carreer.

Nearly all my bosses have been good or great.

A really good boss would find a way to stop me spending so much time here on CR4. Now: how would that make me feel?

My best boss was when I was a CAD applications engineer, tasked with training and solving customer problems. When I was hired he made sure I got the requisite company training and then threw me headfirst into the customer snake pit.

When he found that I could hold my head above water, he then just made sure I had ongoing training, shielded me from the corporate BS and let me have my head within my assigned region. During those years I accumulated a file cabinet full of customer testimonials that I attribute to him. He constantly threw new challenges at me to keep me motivated. Responded when I needed something, ignored me the rest of the time. Normally only saw him face to face once or twice a month, unless we happened to be at the same conference or customer site. Best years of my career, and I would've walked off a cliff for that man.

Present boss - micro manager, takes credit, assigns blame, doesn't have time for peons (anybody under his level). Impossible to find when you need information, which is never provided upfront. Ugh, I gotta find a new job or retire.

D@mn, I wish you hadn't put it that way. Now I'm gonna be depressed until 5PM.

Which reminds me of another problem with my current boss...

He likes to show up in our office about 4:45 PM to discuss project issues, especially on Fridays. The rest of us work 8-5 and like to get out on time. He, apparently on special accommodation from his management, typically works from 10 or 11 to 7 or 8, so it's no skin off his back to work late but on Fridays it really pisses the rest of us off.

So, who knows, I may just be depressed until 6 PM or so.

Don't worry Hooker, this boss will pass on like all bad events ... tsunamis and such. i speak from experience. Trust in God (we Indians can't do anything without the Gods) and he will blow away... virtue will always win.

i really mean this. Not tongue in cheek, believe me. From this distance, i can see you are an asset to your company. i can't believe that not even one guy above your boss can't see that !

Good luck

You could drop this on his desk

Shabbat (Hebrew), in English: the Sabbath, "rest" or "cessation") is the seventh day of the Jewish week and a day of rest in Judaism.

Shabbat is observed from a few minutes before sunset on Friday evening until a few minutes after the appearance of three stars in the sky on Saturday night.

The exact times, therefore, differ from week to week and from place to place, depending on the time of sunset at each location.

Such tends to give the type 'pause'.

That would go over like a lead balloon. He's a fundamentalist Christian. Believes the New Testament is to be taken literally.

Nice try, though.

Re: Ever Had a Good Boss?

Like most folks posting on this discussion, I have had the whole range. On the whole, the best were the ones that were secure in their own abilities, trusted me -- but held me accountable, and were not afraid to admit their own mistakes.

One boss (who was OK, not too good, but not too bad), asked me one time why I was being disloyal after we had had a pretty heated discussion about something our group was supposed to do and how to do it. I explained to him that was actually loyalty. I didn't want him or the team to look bad and fail. In the end, we do it the way the boss says, because he or she has the ultimate responsibility. It is my responsibility to give the best support/input/performance possible. It is just easier when you think that it is being heard.

So, a good boss is one that looks out for the group and supports two-way communication. Respect, trust, training, etc. are all part of that.

I too have had bosses on both ends of the spectrum. The good ones taught me that knowing your limits and being open about what you do and do not know makes for great leadership skills.

My bad bosses taught me that even an idiot can still somehow manage to run a successful business and above all what Forest Gumps saying of "Stupid is as stupid does" means. Believe me I saw a lot of stupid doing what it did best even when the best of recommendations went against it.

Best Boss I ver had tried to make my job easier every day. He would stop by and see what was going on even go and take care of daily task for me so I could get some special project done. He was always there when I called for anything and when he had to fire someone they often quit so he would not have to fire them. He was that good that people did not want to hurt him by not doing their best.
