Engineering Success in the 21st Century

Posted April 26, 2011 8:17 AM

Referring to engineers, the deck of a recent commentary piece reads: "It was once both necessary and sufficient to be technically competent. Now it is only necessary." Do you agree? If so, what would you say are some of the keys to engineering success in the 21st Century, other than being good at engineering? And how is the pursuit of success different now than in the past?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pneumatics, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pneumatics today.

What is the deck of a story?

The narrative hook. Makes you want to read further... usually.

I am still wrestling with it... "It was once both necessary and sufficient to be technically competent. Now it is only necessary." seem sort of like "Is it farther to Chicago, or by train?"

Thanks!

I guess I understand his point, but I haven't read the article ;-)

IIUC, he's saying that at one time, being technically competent was necessary (it still is, or should be) and sufficientm in other words, you could achieve a modicum (or more) of success in life based on your technical competency.

Now it seems that technical competency is often not enough to achieve a modicum of success in life.

Presumably you also have to be something more, like a snake oil salesman, charlatan, ponzi schemer, politician, or something along those lines. ;-)

I read that column and wondered who is supposed to be editing the content posted on that website. That's one of the worst pieces of 'professional' writing I've seen. The writer kept switching between 2nd person and third person point of view, and between active and passive voice. This guy is a 'professional engineer'? (He had 'PE' after his name.)

Well, he is a P.E., not a B.A.J.

As you say, the story is difficult to follow.

It has never been "sufficient". The author is referring to specific programs that can be helpful today. A good engineer has always used many of the concepts in these programs, even if they weren't defined formally.

In many cases "good connections" or "political influence" or "cheapness" outweighs "technical competence".
