What Invention Would You Like to be Remembered For?

Posted May 20, 2011 7:06 AM

The result of a half-hour brainstorming session between Willard Boyle and fellow Bell Labs researcher George Smith, CCDs and the electronic imaging industry they launched have had a profound effect on the world. If you could invent anything, what would it be?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Light & Laser, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Light & Laser today.

If I could invent anything, it would be a drug or therapy that repairs damaged nerve cells in the brain and body. This would give people suffering with Alzheimer's, Lou Gehrig's Disease, or dozens of other types of neuro-muscular diseases a chance to re-connect with their families and enjoy life again in ways they cannot due to their illnesses.

Wow, that makes my desire to create a golf ball which would go twenty yards farther look pretty tame!

I did invent an automatic toilet flusher using reflective infrared sensing back in 1982. That got me the reputation of "that flusher guy" for quite some time.

I would like to reinvent the electric power device that Tesla supposedly invented to get energy from the outer atmosphere. Everyone could then have "free" (or nearly free) electrical power.

Have some fun today,

I already did my bit to better the world, for free too, with the DIY Grid Tie Inverter designs and an efficient easy to build phase converter design that makes running three phase motors off of single phase power at their rated loads and efficiency's possible.

The converter system.

The whopper I told my mother about who broke her favourite teapot. Big sis really didn't deserve to be grounded for a week. Splashing some tea on her shoes was a stroke of genius (even if I do say so myself).

if that is 'invention' then you are a Creationist!

'round here we call that a 'fabrication' not an invention.

I'm sure she got you back at some point? being female and all.

It fell within the definition of invention. Don't even try to tell me that you never did similar. Sister or not, even a Canadian can get that gag

Where are my hover boots? The science programmes have been saying they'll be available 'soon' for years now & I still don't have any, I'm tired of all this walking manually.

A one man submarine similar to "deep flight" but has to be sit down as I hate lying down and looking up. I've been working on a design for years just can't crack the weight to bouncy ratio.

The problem with this type is that you still need to be careful with your depths, because if you go too deep or rise to quick it could cause problems. You would also need basic scuba training with this type. It would need to be a sealed cockpit, so it can be pressurised to 1 ATM so there is no chance of the bends.

More of a mini sub like this or this.

The one I posted previously mentions the use of a bladder to control buoyancy, would that work with your design?

I'm particularly fond of this one, if anyone has an extra couple of billion...

I don't know how much energy could be generated, but it inspires me as a cool place to live.

I would like to invent a "dark switch". Throw the switch and the light is absorbed in the room. May be able add a "dimmer"? (Brightener)? function.

What if you have the opposite problem?

Abraham Lincoln was once walking with a companion who noticed a dachshund and remarked, "That dog's legs are too short."
Abe replied to the effect of "Really? They reach all the way to the ground, don't they?"

Abraham Lincoln was asked how long a dogs legs should be, the answer as you pointed out was "just long enough to reach the ground". So how long should a man's (ahem) be? Oh, you know, just long enough to reach the ground......

(rim shot here...)

It doesn't have to be real...Just check the internet. I wonder exactly how many suckers (oops, poor choice of word) would take legal action over some such gadget not doing as advertized.
