Were You Overexposed?

Posted May 22, 2011 7:00 AM

The failure of Amazon's cloud service and the multiple breaches of Sony's entertainment site may have compromised more than 100 million users. The consequences will likely range from inconvenience to identity theft. Were you affected by either of these events? In what way? As an individual or as part of a project team? Did you have backup systems in place or take extra security measures to mitigate the consequences? What will you do differently to prevent being caught off-guard next time?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Engineering Management, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Engineering Management today.

Neither of those specific events, but I was exposed by the Texas Comptroller's office leaving unemployment ins. information on an unsecured server for several months. Not real happy about it either. but there is not a lot I can do about it.

Wow! Is this something new? Very few hits on a search, but I found this short blurb.

Sounds bad!

3.5 million people's SSN, TXDL, and other personal information was left hanging out in the wind. It was BIG news here in Texas. Do a Google search for "Texas comptroller data breach" and you'll see what i mean. it was in the Dallas Morning News, Austin Statesman, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News, and just about every other Texas newspaper. Also was in Forbes and Wall Street journal too. Honestly, I think it rivals the Sony PSN breach in the amount of data that was exposed. Because it gave enough info to allow a complete identity theft, instead of just stealing a credit card number they can steal an entire identity with this data.

And you have to ask yourself if the US government being in charge of maintaining your electronic medical records is really a good idea too.

It certainly doesn't strengthen the case having the state of Texas, handle your electronic medical records...

It doesn't strengthen the case for electronic medical records period. There is absolutely NO system that is safe from data breech. NONE. Those who wish to build super-databases with everyone's data from birth to grave put us all at risk.
