Why Can't We Stop Snacking?

Posted July 07, 2011 2:36 PM

From Discover Health & Medicine:

Have you ever eaten a single potato chip or French fry that sent you spiraling into nearly uncontrollable gluttony? Scientists are now saying that these sober binges are actually quite similar to pot smokers' notorious bouts of the munchies: fatty foods cause your body to release marijuana-like chemicals called endocannabinoids, and this likely compels you to continue stuffing your face.

Thanks a lot. This very picture was my first exposure to back boobs about a month ago. I had finally healed from the searing of the image into my poor brain; now the ghastly wound is opened anew.

Well, at least there were some serious comments about the article on article page. Pretty good ones, too.

The problem with so much research of this type is the mindset that there is "one" magic chemical bullet that will solve whatever problem is being researched. In some cases this may be almost true. I say, almost, because most mechanisms in the body are homeostatic. It is more correct to say there are chemical "processes" in the body and a lot of the ones we know about are closed-loop controlled.

Most drugs are aimed at interfering with or modifying these chemical pathways. I think side-effects of drugs are due to the upset of these feedback controlled pathways, which in turn may likely upset other processes. So the body in total reacts in such a way as to be upset. I would liken it to thumping a nicely spinning top and then watching it wobble. Depending on how much you thump it and how well it is spinning, it may lose its gyroscopic steadiness and collapse.

Defenders of drugs would say that "the" drug is used to try to correct an already haywire process. That statement and intent is true in many diseases. But the imperfection of the drug to achieve the desired result spills over into these side-effects. And in far too many cases doesn't even do a good "imperfect" job at the task it is supposed to accomplish.

In this instance, food types are being blamed for throwing off the body's normal chemical processes. That I would heartily agree with. Much of today's processed food is thumping the body's spinning top on a regular basis. Most of us are in the wobbling mode. Because wrong food is usually a slow "killer" in this way, most of us indulge until the piper calls. Reversing some of this damage is a slow, if not impossible, ordeal.

Problem is, the pharmaceutical company would have congress identify obesity as a disease. So they can cash in by restricting natural weight loss to their processed drugs.

So they can corner the market on the "Magic Bullet" again and again.

As well as putting these overweight people on disability.

This also explains why, on the morning after a vagus nerve meltdown, the bag of Cheetos has ascended to the status of "essential medication". I need medical pot!

Because Lay's Potato Chips declared that you can't eat just one. (They seem to be right.)

You might be able to get it down to just one at a time, though.
