Energy or the Environment?

Posted September 27, 2011 7:00 AM

The need for new energy sources is escalating, and hydraulic fracking to extract natural gas might be one answer. However, water quality and other environmental concerns are growing. New technology appears to have the answer to some environmental issues, but is it enough?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Valve Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Valve Technology today.

Keeping warm or having drinking water to survive. Without water we die so keeping warm would therefore be of no consequence. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Do we stay alive or do we keep warm till we die of thirst or are poisoned by something toxic in our water? Tough choice? Not really.

Change the process so we can have safe drinking water and also more natural gas. Hmmm. There's a thought worth considering. Maybe holding back the Frigging Fracking Process awhile is the answer.

It's sad that we are stuck with old methods. Poisoning the water is just the first part of the problem. I don't see the use of this fuel being a clean energy either. And it's probably the most detrimental part of the whole process.

If people want to drill so bad, what about geothermal?

Study up on geothermal and the challenges a bit before getting all hot and bothered - the problems encountered are immense.

Very perseptive that you sense my irritation.
There is a big push for the "fracking" process here where I live in the US, and I am dead against it! Furthermore, I believe unless we curb the burning of fossil fuels rather quickly, we'll all be feeling hot and bothered in no time.

I see - one of the loony left? Come on, much of the story about fracking is BS. I am all for it.

So we have to stop with fossil fuels immediately? It ain't gonna happen.

Being a American I do keep up on the 'hot button' topics such this one.

If you live in Iceland it works:

Since this is closer to your home you might find it more interesting and it probably affects a lot more people then the population of Iceland

And remember it may only be a "handful" to you but at least it's a start.

And I've spoken to people in Pennsylvania and they are not very happy when they can actually light up their water as it comes out of the faucet. They are afraid that if the natural gas is coming up with their water what prevents the toxic fracking fluids from coming up too.

The hydro project - good deal and I like hydro having grown up in Oregon where it is common. I have lived in numerous countries around the world so many places are a bit like home.

Here anytime a hydro project starts the green idiots come out of the woodwork worrying about 1) ancient civilizations, 2) some animal/bird/reptile/fish/plant may go extinct due to the dam or 3) this position is reserved for whatever loony idea they come up with next. Not to mention that Iraq and Syria will probably protest due to reduced water flow.

One section of Izmir has natural hot water that is piped to the district for heating purposes. Fine but not a big thing.

If your friends wanted to bother to send water samples for free tests rather than whine they would be a lot more aware. Myself, I would just put in a reverse osmosis unit for starters.
