Hackers Pose Explosive Threat

Posted September 03, 2015 3:49 PM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Nuclear power facilities, manufacturing facilities, and even the Pentagon face growing danger from cyber criminals, according to security professionals and a government report. Criminals may be near to causing a shutdown of service or even the "catastrophic destruction of utility infrastructure such as an explosion." A Government Accounting Office report found that the Pentagon doesn't adequately protect its water and electrical infrastructure from attack. For example, one security expert developed a model that simulates using valves to destroy pipes by creating water hammer problems. Water hammer is one of more than a dozen ways to remotely damage refineries and plants, according to another researcher.

Weaknesses have to be dealt with - they don't have to be advertised.

Just sayin'

Unless said advertisements are actually diversions.

I was sort of half kidding, but I think it is possible. Do you think that there are no conspiracies whatsoever?

Not sure the government is clever enough to create diversions.

I would ask you "a diversion from what?", but then I would have to shoot myself! Wait, did I say that right? :)

Is it really that big of a surprise? Cyber attacks have always been an issue. But it's even worse now.

What needs to be done first is to take every piece of Cisco equipment or Cisco powered equipment and toss it into the scrap heap. All china owned and we expect it to protect our network infrastructure. And the govt keeps buying the garbage, even for mission critical pplications. It needs to be taken off the gsa approved list yesterday.

And all critical applications need to be actual closed networks. We have "closed" networks, but as long as idiots that don't know what they're doing control them then idiots will still be able to visit Facebook and private email, and computers will still be able to go out and get updates instead of being turned back to private update servers like they're supposed to be.

Net protection in this country is one giant fallacy.

It's time that these agencies should go off line. 100% no hackers

Not true, going offline won't completely solve the problem. See: This thread.

"They" have been saying things like this since DARPA went online with the internet. It's just a way of scaring the public into allowing the government to throw away ridiculous amounts of money without having to show results. The results being, nothing happens.

First of all, which "security professionals?"

Secondly, which "government report?"

Cite your references.

The government uses these report to get funding so the public thinks they are addressing this threat. And when no cyber terrorist attacks happen or catastrophic destruction occurs they say, "see? It works!"
