The Rats Take Control

Posted October 20, 2011 7:32 AM

Kevin Warwick, a cybernetics professor at University of Reading in the UK, has built a robot controlled by rat brain cells, the world's first machine controlled by live tissue. The project is based on growing rat neurons on a 128-electrode array and using them to control a simple robot consisting of two wheels with a sonar sensor. He wants to do the same with human neurons. What applications could a robot like this have?

"He wants to do the same with human neurons."

Why isn't the size of our brain what makes up our level of intelligence? Does the neural net work of a rats brain process and store information that much differently from a humans?

If these people want to do the same with human brain material it will be highly unethical, and I will protest against it, these scientists should stop trying to play at being God!

"Play at being god"?

Is god making robots out of brain cells now too?

It sure seems so some of the time.

With a nod to Gartth, it's called the Assembly Line of God.

What applications could a robot like this have?

Hmm lets see... human brain in a bell jar, controlling a robot... well for starters, the robot will have to be capable of tending the brain, feeding the appropriate nutrient solutions and so on, so the brain can feed itself and stay alive.

In other words, it looks to me like a particularly bad mid life crisis, with quest-for-immortality-in-a-jar overtones.

Also, if we read on and listen to Warwick's views, he seems to think that having an implant somehow alters 'evolution' and makes the bizarre statement that cyborgs will become a "species" and ordinary humans will become a mere "sub-species"... is Nietzche in the room? I see it's possible for a mad scientist to grow neurons in a jar without understanding basic biology concepts.

However, following on the theme of "what applications", I'm going to guess that Warwick's robot will need some military capabilities, if he's going to suppress the "subspecies" who still have their own bodies to defend or.. run away!.. is this recognizable as some hokey sci fi movie I might have seen... because it's really ringing a bell jar.

A robot like this could have wonderfully sinister and unethical applications. Bring it all on!! Yes, the Matrix. Just accept that it is real.
