Verify That You Have Good Scotch - With Lasers

Posted November 01, 2011 2:36 PM

From Forbes - Tech:

As in many areas of modern life, the whiskey industry is no stranger to the scourge of counterfeiting. So if, like me, you enjoy a good single malt, the last thing you want if you splurge on an expensive bottle is to find out you were duped and it's not the real thing.

Glad to see that the article favors the proper spelling of whiskey, with an 'e'. I've had various good samplings of Scotch, but I found I preferred Tullamore Dew and Bushmills.

Please see this. (The article used both spellings unsystematically.)

As long as you have to open the bottle to get the test drop, you might as well give it the tongue test, anyway.

From your cited website

Whisky vs Whiskey: The spelling Whisky is used for whiskies distilled in Scotland, Wales, Canada, and Japan, while Whiskey is only used for the spirits distilled in Ireland and America. However, a 1968 directive of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms now specifies Whisky as the official U.S. spelling!

I really don't see how that is unsystematic.

As long as you have to open the bottle to get the test drop, you might as well give it the tongue test, anyway.

Couldn't agree more.

Ahh, but the oldest distillery in the world (500 years +) is Bushmills, and they spell it 'whiskey'.

Besides, if those dimwits at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are spelling it without the 'e', that's a good enough reason for me to spell it with the 'e'.
