Does it remind you of a story?
Can you think of another place that has a similar look or style to it?

Some sort of olde observatory ? Clancy Brown would probably enjoy a sword fight on it, whatever it is.

Score !

I'd love to have seen 10, 000 people trying to gather around it .

Was that 'dedeuced', John, or have you seen the thing ? It's a fascinating structure.

I confess I haven't seen it - tho' it'll be on my visiting list if I ever get a couple of free days. Google did the hard bit .

Well, it was still some cool research (and now on my list too), but please don't tell me you've not applied for the tree feller job - I have it on good authority that only two positions are available .

The second one needs a steely eyed Yul Brynner striding thru it (or possibly an away team from the original Star Trek series).

Definitely by a dyslectic builder who just couldn't make up his mind on the style.

jt.

Two men were talking in the clubhouse bar after a day on the greens recounting
their golfing experiences. One said "If I'm doing around on my own, my dog
accompanies me, and if I go one over par he somersaults backwards."

"That's incredible!" respond the others.

"And if I go 2 over par he double summersalts backwards!"

"Amazing" he said, "How does he do it?"

"I kick him twice."

Playing 'keepy uppy' with a dog might land me in jail, but that's insanely funny . I'm not sure that works with an American 'football', so here's a starter. I can't do it with a real one, but never mind that - the dog is giving me some very iffy looks !

I met Mow Cop in late 1944 when my brother and I were sent to live with a family in the nearby town of Kidsgrove to be safe from the V2s. My Dad was "called up" in late 1940 or early '41 and put in the North Staffordshire Regiment (we were Londoners but they just filled vacancies). He became friendly with a man, who was actually from Kidsgrove in North Staffordshire. Two of this man's sisters joined the military and were posted to London, on the balloons I think. They came to visit us frequently and when the V2s started, they were instrumental in arranging with their parents to take us.

There is a dynamic regarding fear, and how it dissipates with knowledge, even though the danger is not lessened. During the blitz it looked as though there was no defense, the fighters were taking a big toll on the bombers but they kept coming until Hitler gave up on the idea of invasion. The bombing didn't stop but was at a lower level. Some people deemed it safe enough to bring home the children that had been evacuated at the beginning of the war. The V1s were frightening at first but then the RAF found ways to handle many of them and the fears dissipated but the V2s were rockets, there was no defense, they went up, turned over and came down on the target at supersonic velocity, and so the kept the terror factor for the adults, we children didn't understand how it was different being killed by one of those instead of the normal bomb.

I have a vague memory of having walked to Mow Cop, but I think it must be false.
