Amazing Dad Builds Son A Spaceship Simulator

Posted April 12, 2013 9:19 AM

From Crave: gorgeous gadgets and other crushworthy stuff. - CNET:

When it comes to make-believe, kids are pretty canny -- a simple refrigerator box can fly them to the moon. But inspired by physicists and educators Neil deGrasse Tyson and Carl Sagan, one dad has gone above and beyond in getting his son into space.

Many years ago there was a cover illustration on Psychology Today magazine. It's Christmas morning, and a kid is surrounded by all his fancy new toys. But he is scooting along the floor in the box one of them came in! Wasn't it ever thus?

When I was a kid, there was no finer prize than a large box....You could use the box as a fort or clubhouse or just lay in it and dream of the possibilities....You could cut holes in it to spy, you could use it as trap for birds, you could smash it and make it more pliable, and when you had exhausted all the possibilities, you could use it as a sled to slide down hills for hours of exhausting fun....Rumors of people getting large appliances would circulate the neighborhood at the speed of what joyous expectation demanded....and brave was the soul that would approach the uncaring owner to ask, "Can I have that box?"....

Exactly! Just as Calvin and Hobbes nailed so well. (The cartoon guys, not their dopey namesakes.)

The seating position looks a little strange.

Could that be relativistic effect?

Re: "seating position looks a little strange" and (above) "... cool, but it lacks using a kids wild imagination"...

DAD's the one supplying imagination, here ... if he REALLY wants the kid to "develop-the-dream", he needs to drop a buck-or-two (as time-moves-forward)...

Who can design him ('twin') gimble-sort of mounts for a pair of seats that'll knock the kid's (and his friends'!) socks off, when they're steering to dodge 'space-chunks' in the Kuiper Belt, Scattered Disc, Oort Cloud and beyond .

He oughtta develop a website for the 'project', and encourage passers-by to donate towards its ongoing development...(!$$$!)Cha-Ching!

"He oughtta develop a website for the 'project', and encourage passers-by to donate towards its ongoing development..."

Excellent idea. Or at least components so the kid can DIY with his dad. It would help the child develop some powerful skills and be a good father-child relationship builder, to.
