One big problem with this.

If the workaholics manager/management is not a workaholic their outgoing and resourceful work ethics will be seen as a threat and instead of being given added resources and the like to further put their self motivated drive to better use they will most often be denied or outright blocked from getting their goals met until they eventually either leave the company on their own out of frustration or begin to be seen as a serious enough threat to their less than capable management and are sent packing for whatever reasons they can find to justify it to themselves.

I for one have been in the working world for around 20 years now and I can honestly say I have seen far more workaholics leave or be ran off by and due to management blocking them by any number of ways and reasons than I ever have seen one rewarded and given added resources to become the best they can.

I am not a workaholic by any means but I know full well how any lazy self serving manager can and will undermine good employees just to save their own position even if no one was ever really after it.

By far and large self motivation, drive, and positive work ethics do not get a person rewarded in the job place. They will get you noticed but not usually for the reasons you want.

Yup, good post. There's some clever quote about surrounding yourself with giants... rather than the usual management ploy of only employing those more stupid than yourself so they don't show you up.
If only I could be bothered to google it.

PS. The real way to manage 'em is to actually implement some of the fancy buzz words that management consultants and the like use when they can't acutually think of anything specific...
like "enabling" and "facilitating"
I think I should maybe go sit in the cynical chair

The old phrase "nail on the head" comes to mind. Good Answer!

Contrary to what my better half might tell you I do not consider myself a workaholic either but I am looking forward to starting at my new company the week after next for the exact reason you pointed out, My manager has blocked any and all possibility of advancement for me here so I shall go elsewhere!
