"Water is the only drink for a wise man."

Posted June 23, 2013 12:00 AM by Chelsey H

Did you know that human blood is 83% water? Did you know that by the time you feel thirsty you have already lost over 1% of your total water amount? Water is critical for every bodily process and as the outside temperature starts to increase, dehydration becomes a very real concern.

Getting in the habit of drinking water throughout the day has many benefits.

· Prevents cramps and sprains - Water helps jeep joints lubricated and muscles more elastic so joint pain is less likely. If cells don't get enough water they don't perform as well because they can't maintain the balance of fluids and electrolytes. It's especially important to replace the fluid lost during exercise. Start drinking water before you start sweating and keep drinking throughout the workout.

· Makes you smarter - Your brain is 90% water so drinking water helps you think, focus, and concentrate better. Drinking lots of water ensures that your brain is getting all the oxygen it needs. It also boosts energy and ensures that your nerves can relay messages to and from the brain in the way they were meant to.

· Helps weight loss - This is my favorite benefit! Drinking lots of water removes by-products of fat, reduces how much you can eat (because you're fillilng up before you consume meals), and reduces hunger. This also applies to food with high water content (like fruits and veggies) because its high volume requires more chewing and is absorbed more slowly by the body so you feel full. Water has zero calories and boosts your metabolism! It's a win-win.

· Gives you beautiful skin - Water keeps skin moisturized which makes it look fresh, soft, and smooth. Since being de-hydrated can make your skin look dry and wrinkled, drinking more water may reduce the look of wrinkles! Keep the moisture in by using a facial moisturizer every day.

· Keeps you regular - Water is important for digestion. It helps kidneys transport waste products in and out of cells. This makes your urine light in color and free of odor. Water also prevents constipation by keeping things moving through the gastrointestinal tract and prevents the colon from pulling water from stools to maintain hydration.

· Keeps you healthy - Water can help fight flu, cancer, and other ailments like headaches (which are commonly caused by dehydration). It also flushes out toxins through sweat and urination which reduces the risk of kidney stones and UTI's.

· Makes you happy! All the benefits above lead to you feeling better and therefore happier in general! You'll also be happy with all the money you save by not buying other (less good for you) drinks. Water is almost always free and we are lucky enough to have it freely available as well.

Currently some friends and I have challenged ourselves to drink 64 oz of water a day. It's a lot and it's a lot to get used too, especially when I never usually drink water. Some tips I've found to make it easier is taking a water bottle with me everywhere. I drink water in the car and at my desk with a straw because I can continue to type or drive without removing my focus from my task. I also love to add lemon or cucumber (or both!) to water…it can get pretty boring so it's ok to spice it up a little. Eating more fruits and vegetables also makes a huge difference since about 20% of our fluid intake comes from foods.

My secret to 'success'. Image Credit: Personal Photo.

So I challenge you, can you drink 64 ounces of water every day for a week? Let me know how it goes!

Over drinking water can be dangerous as well....It's necessary to keep electrolyte balance in the body and brain for optimal performance....This becomes noticeable by drinking copious amounts of water and fasting, or eating very little, over the course of several days....

"Water intoxication, also known as water poisoning or dilutional hyponatremia, is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside safe limits by over-hydration."

"At the onset of this condition, fluid outside the cells has an excessively low amount of solutes (such as sodium (hyponatremia) and other electrolytes) in comparison to that inside the cells causing the fluid to shift through (via osmosis) into the cells to balance its concentration. This causes the cells to swell. In the brain, this swelling increases intracranial pressure (ICP). It is this increase in pressure which leads to the first observable symptoms of water intoxication: headache, personality changes, changes in behavior, confusion, irritability, and drowsiness. These are sometimes followed by difficulty breathing during exertion, muscle weakness, twitching, or cramping, nausea, vomiting, thirst, and a dulled ability to perceive and interpret sensory information. As the condition persists, papillary and vital signs may result including bradycardia and widened pulse pressure. The cells in the brain may swell to the point where blood flow is interrupted resulting in cerebral edema. Swollen brain cells may also apply pressure to the brain stem causing central nervous system dysfunction. Both cerebral edema and interference with the central nervous system are dangerous and could result in seizures, brain damage, coma or death.[4]"

I have it on good authority that we're all unique and have differing needs. This eight cup fad has gone on long enough. All of your reasons say we need water, but not how much.

The coffee I drink is almost all water, same with the tea and fruit juice. The apple I eat is about 85% water, the orange.... need I go on?

I do hate it when "do-gooder" nannies try to tell me how to live without good argument and facts to support their thesis.

I'm not sure that that much water is good for anybody but camels.

After many years of personal observation, I have come to the conclusion that beer is mostly water anyway.

So, knowing that 64 ounces of water is the recommended intake per person, per day, and assuming that beer contains at least 85% water, I recon that today i will be drinking my daily water requirement for September 23rd, 2017.

Now, are brats considered vegetables?

I've always thought that God, in His infinite wisdom, would let some of that rain fall on hops, too.

Everything in moderation.

Cheers.

I mostly only drink beer, specifically Guiness, unless I run out, then it's Merlot.

I never drink water unless I've been working in 90+ degree heat for more than half a day and then only about a quart. Two cups of coffee every morning.

I'm almost 65 and still healthy enough to have mixed and poured a ton of concrete in a wheelbarrow last week, all by hand with a hoe and a trowel. I did drink two bottles of water that day.

I like Guinness and Merlot too; and a bunch of other things.

For hydration and water intake, I revert to the old standbyes. Bud, Bush, or Miller high life.

Glad to see you finally got the wife set in concrete; time to collect the insurance money and build a nice workshop.

Edit- Doh!!!! Sorry man.

That was supposed to be our secret. I hope the NSA isn't still tracking you.

I adhere to the Merle Haggard creed for drinking only 'Top Shelf'!

Saves a lot of money on aspirin.

Also, that line in 'Cherokee Fiddle' that goes, "...Good whiskey never let him loose his place..."

Getting a lot of work lately securing homes against the blooming rat population. One guy caught ten but one still ate the wiring out of his $75K Mercedes, lol. That little pour paid pretty well for a days work.

Nope they mostly all went home or where ever they were going next. Well, they might me but it was mostly to make sure I didn't get attacked. Turns out two of my neighbors work for them so I'm in good hands.

I wouldn't have know that tho if I hadn't blown the whistle on Saheed.

That's pretty cool that you were able to take part in a terrorist bust.

Why don't you share the story over on the data collection thread?

Re: "Water is the only drink for a wise man."

Fairly recently I discovered I only have one kidney.
Whilst investigating the minor iregularity in my blood test the doc asked how much water I drank a day.
I started off.

About half a pint of milk on my cereal and a mug of tea...
Cup of tea at about 10am...

He interrupted...
"NO JUST WATER!"

It was only my polite upbringing that stopped me smacking him one.
What an idiot...

It's this nonsensical brainwashing we have been subject to that says tea, milk, fruit juice etc have no water content.
I read an article that traced where this myth about 'n' litres of water a day originated from. I can't remember where but I think it have even had an uncorrected switch from pints to litres.

And another thing, waterbourne dieases are probably a major killer so dinking water is V risky, that's why beer was the widespread drink in the middle ages.

Del
(Blimey I need a cup of tea now... I shall watch to see if the boiling water from the kettle magically transforms into something else as it hits the tea bag)

Hey don't get me wrong as I like my water with some flavor also. But most the good stuff has diuretics in it that defeat the effort of considering it as water. Causing it to come out just about as fast as you put it in. So my solution drink more of it.

Not to mention liver fluke... and lots more. Read the write-up on how

many times the water is recycled in the towns.... Why magnify the risks?

Just listen to your body, if you're thirsty, it will tell you!

Guys there is one issue not being mentioned here (that I saw anyway). When a person has a compromised liver or kidney function, the addition of purified (not necessarily distilled) water is very advantageous to the fluidic balance of the entire body. While a healthy young person can drink coffee or beer and easily break down, filter and modify the contents which are other than H2O, persons with liver troubles, for example, must drastically reduce the livers work load and pure clean water is essential. I cannot help but think that to some extent or another this can be advantageous to the rest of us as well.

Really?

No, Chelsea. I lived thru many cycles of fads, like this. All came and went.

Fixed amount of water? I do not think so, nor did I experience so. My biochemistry does not tell me so either.

Everything in good measure. In that I am more french, or italian than anything else. And that allows liking life without fretting the "end of life, as we know it" "issues".

What happens if you add monosodium glutamate to water? Does it taste more watery?

I drink about a gallon and a half of water a day. It flushes out the previous weekend's fun, and preps me for the following weekend.

Some of the comments here really crack me up. As a nutritional novice by way of hobby I have a pretty good understanding of the effect of water and other water containing fluids on the body. I assure you they are not the same. It's like trying to say I'm going to put crude oil in my gas tank of my car and expect it to run. I mean why not, I've got a filter, and all the components for gasoline are contained right there in the crude. The refining process just takes out the extra right? Sorry it just doesn't work that way. Cactus is a majority water, but if you try and consume only cactus in the desert you'll die within a couple of days unless you have extra water to offset the process. The extra strain on the body to extract the water from the fiber will take a massive toll. Ask any military person who had been through desert training, or survival expert.

Straw men.

Your crude/gasoline analogy misses the mark completely. A more appropriate one would be to gasoline with additives to help the engine run, but then, that would run counter to your argument. I don't eat cactus, just apples and peaches and oranges...

As philosophy of living, there is something to it. Especially, when you add a dash of minerals to keep the electrolytes in a semblance of good balance.

Other than that, live it up!

Since we are repeating:

http://cr4.globalspec.com/blogentry/7843/Water-is-the-Only-Drink-for-a-Wise-Man

Not entirely accurate.

Excerpt

Until recently, scientists also generally agreed that drinking coffee causes dehydration. This seems logical: By urinating more often and in greater volume, you're draining the body of precious fluids, right?
Wrong, according to Lawrence Armstrong, a professor of exercise and environmental physiology at the University of Connecticut.
As Armstrong explains it: "Caffeine creates a diuretic effect in the body, this is true. But a diuretic effect is not the same thing as whole body dehydration. What caffeine does is cause a brief increase in urine output followed by a decline."
Imagine, the scientist says, that you drink a liter of water. In the period immediately following this feat, your urine output will increase and then eventually decline. "Does this mean you are dehydrated?" Armstrong asks.
The answer, of course, is no.
