Wow. I feel like we are at the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

Long before the data on the media disappears, the state of the art of technology moves on. I still have some 8 inch floppies from 30 years ago, but I doubt I'll ever read what's on them. Data on CDs is supposed to last 100 years, but much sooner than that nobody will be using CDs anymore.

Pretty cool, ones and zeroes will be ones and zeroes forever, but they will need to know how did we encode them.

I think it is necessary to create new Rosseta stones in gold with the ASCII code engraved to the bit level, along with a waveform of the sound produced by that character when pronounced (sound will still produce the same waves, now and then).

Imagery spirally micro-engraved as single frames around a gold cylinder, will allow them to peep into our lives, using only a simple lens and sunlight to project the frames on any surface that is flat and clear enough. Again, a sound wave at the bottom of the image will be very helpful.

With this, they will be able to listen* to the words constructed with our characters, and the context of the image will reveal its meaning, they could decipher many languages (if engraved as separate waveforms) this way.

There is a nice business out there for some companies that deal in "converting" data from one device to another. I spent a lot of time developing SW to read 9 track tapes (remember those?) and writing it onto other media. We had an employee who's job it was to ensure that the company always had the "old" computers and peripherals available just for things like this. At the time, many government contracts required support for 20+ years! Probably still do that. When the company was "sold" and new management was less interested in customer loyalty, they "down sized" the department and person that was responsible for all that gear. Now support is "3rd party"...your government dollars at work.

What kind of "vice" would one use for crushing these? Smoking, drinking, fornicating, chewing gum?
