I would love to see historical data on the number of incidents over the last 50 years.
My guess is the SUVs are the major problem.
The other issue is I think people will rely on the cameras for backing up, but they must be looking forward and down, which is useless for observing cross traffic.
I expect to see accident rates rise for cross traffic collisions as people back out of driveways and parking spaces while looking at their dash displays. We will be creating a whole new generation of drivers that will no longer be looking back, but relying on technology to be that safety net.
My solution has always been that I back into parking spaces as there is a much lower chance of striking a person or object doing so and much safer to pull out of a space going forward.
When backing into a space I must always drive past it, so I know it is clear before even engaging reverse.
Pulling out of a space maximizes my ability to not only see forward, but on either side for cross traffic.
I had used the companies car that had the back up camera's, it is convenience and I see it as a convenience.
But one thing I can see what this does, it's going to get people out of the habit of turning your head (which I felt is normal) and actually looking where you are backing .........
Is this just going to be a trade-off?
I would like to also see the data on the justification of this.

Yeah, we'll end up with elderly people who have poor neck mobility as a result... and no I not joking!

(P.S. More poor reportage... it doesn't say where it's madatory and uses an un explained acronym. We are not all in the USA and don't all know WTF NHTSA stands for)

I already have poor neck mobility, and that's why I enjoy the cameras., but there still is blind spots. I think the cameras are put in from tredegies from backing up and running over children playing.

Oh great.. More morons who played in the street as kids will make it to adulthood and reproduce creating and even stupider generation of more morons who will play in the street or under the actual moving vehicles next time.
I'm telling ya we got to get a some laws passed that say no one under a 110 IQ gets to reproduce and thats a 110 on the hard test not the easy one.
All I know is, all the races I beat my dad in when we raced when I was a kid....,............. Well,......I found out how fast he really could run when I was really trying to get away......

Coming off the farm and, Used to driving grain trucks.
That's how I flunked my first driving test, because all I use was mirrors......and the instructor told me, I have to physically turn around and looked, and I not depend on mirrors.
Yes, I was driving farm equipment on the road such as grain trucks before I was 16.

As a motorcycle rider i find the worse place is in a parking lot. Most ppl just look behind them and never to the sides because there are cars parked on either side. A rear camera would just add to the danger of a bike rider.

I'm not quite sure of the viewing angle of back-up cameras, but I find that backing out of a parking spot in a supermarket lot requires me to look over both shoulders in addition to straight back because traffic is coming from both directions and I doubt that a camera will pick up that traffic while I'm backing out. When I back out, I always check all 3 mirrors constantly to make sure I'm not going to back into a car or pedestrian. I think you would need 3 cameras to fully monitor the traffic.
I think a much better solution would be to have a wide angle sensor that would sound an alarm if a moving object were to get into your path of movement.
After posting, I went back and read the whole article. The camera would pick up a 10' x 20' patch and that would not be adequate for detecting cross traffic as in a parking lot. I will still continue to observe traffic with my 3 mirrors and looking over my shoulders, camera or no camera. The problem will arise when drivers start to depend on the camera. This camera thing is only for backing out of driveways and not everyone has a driveway. My driveway is a dirt road 1/4 mile long and I don't back down it.
