Until recently, mercury vapor lamps have been
the only light source for UV polymerizing of adhesives. LEDs, however,
are on their way to becoming the technology of choice
for that application. Unlike mercury vapor lamps, LEDs emit a narrow
spectrum of energy at specific wavelengths, increasing their usable
energy and efficiency. In addition, the ability to turn LEDs on and off
rapidly and to precisely and continuously control their output levels
makes them more useful in manufacturing applications. Chemical
formulators, responding to this trend, are developing adhesive products
specifically tailored to UV light.
