Building a Yew Warbow

Posted January 24, 2016 5:56 AM by user-deleted-1105

I've been blogging my bow building for several years now, but recently taken to using Youtube more as the video quality is much better than posting directly onto the blog.
Having done the full build of an English Longbow I had requests to show the full build of a Warbow.
120 pounds draw weight at 32" draw. (too heavy for me to shoot these days... oh to be in my 20s again)
If anyone wants to look the series of 5 short videos is here.

Here's a pic of it at full draw on the tiller.

If anyone fancies doing some analysis there are some thickness dimensions on this post of my blog (the width isn't so vital).

Peace negotiations with the neighbors break down again?

Lets hope they don't discover the virtues of gunpowder or you and your war bow are gonna be SOL.

Some how the phrase "Silent but Deadly" seems to fit.

Makes you wonder how those smaller guys back in the middle ages were able to pull those war bows to full draw multiple times. From what I've read a 120 lb draw weight is a little on the light side.

They estimate the average draw weight was probably about 130 -140.
It's very acheivabe if you are used to manual work or train up a bit.
Technique is important too.
A couple of years back I trained up and managed 100 lb and that's at the wrong side of 60 years old. I can still pull 80-90 once warmed up, but I'm wary of hurting myself.

I think I'd still manage 100 if an armoured knight was bearing down me!

Del, i have been working out for the last 6 months. Eating right and taking better care of myself. At 147 lbs i just , in the last month, have been able to "do the ton". Mind you on Dec. 27 2014 i had a stroke. I hauled out the old compound bow and have never felt better.

Good for you, I've been trying to get the fitness level back up, as few pushups and trunk curls before I go to bed... Problem is, it's so easy to forget one day, and then the next...
Shooting is certainly more fun than the pushups

True....but with push-ups it's much easier to hit the target. I did 30 push-ups the other day and hit the floor every time.
