Portable Device Harvests Energy from Chaotic Motion

Posted February 01, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Engineers have long pursued the idea that the energy of chaotic motion - everything from walking to ocean tides - could be harnessed for electrical generation. But few devices have proven up to the task; that is, sufficiently practical and scalable to provide enough useful, usable power. Now, a UK-company has invented what it believes is a simple, portable device that can realistically convert many of the almost limitless sources of continuous motion energy into electricity. They claim their device can translate various kinds of bi-directional motion around an axis into a rotational motion that can drive a generator, producing anywhere from a few watts to hundreds of kilowatts of power.

What is the current production state of this device?

Is it being used anywhere in a commercial application?

I thought this was invented by an American couple who had rotational output torque from any which way motion, but clearly I was mistaken, they are definitely Brits. Congrats to the Wicketts on this one.

I wish I knew where to buy one. Just for a fascinating "toy"? Maybe, or maybe a doomsday prepping must have.

I could see this working with unconventional wind energy in a unique (maybe cheaper and dirtier) way. Especially in an area such my local one where gusting winds may not be as well harvested as one would prefer.

Very ingenious. I sure would love to see what's inside!
