AI System Beats Top Gun

Posted August 11, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

A University of Cincinnati grad student's ALPHA artificial intelligence system recently bested a U.S. Air Force elite fighter pilot and instructor in aerial combat simulations. "It knew how to defeat the shot I was taking. It moved instantly between defensive and offensive actions as needed," the ace stated. The package has beaten other experts and AI systems, even when handicapped in aircraft and weapons performance and sensors. In the future such a system could be flown in conjunction with human pilots as an electronic wingman.

I'm thinking that this might be a simpler application for AI than driving a car through a neighborhood with children chasing balls into the street. The parameters are well defined and, of course, the machine has excellent reflexes.
