NY Boosts Facial Recognition

Posted October 03, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

New York has taken a leading role in developing counter-terrorism measures through its State Department of Motor Vehicles. Last January the agency implemented advanced facial recognition technology to thwart identity theft. The new method doubles the number of measurement points on a face from 64 to 128. This increase improves matching a digitized driver photograph to any image presented by law enforcement for identification — and even accounts for a person aging.

As most smart phones, etc have rear facing camera technology. How is this better than an Iris scanning App?

I'm looking at terrorism. That's how it's better than iris scanning.

Iris scanning is for authentication, facial scanning is for identification/recognition.

I thought it was bad enough when EZ-Pass was used for vehicle tracking, now there are full-time license plate readers that scan every vehicles' movements in, out, and through an area. When coupled with vehicle information systems such as OnStar, it's relatively easy to know a vehicle's exact movements in real-time. Now it's even possible to track a single pedestrian's movements with the same ease and precision with a network of cameras and computers.

Drove through those in Denver license ID tolls a few years back, got the bill a few weeks later.
