Is this a fake Pinocchio, or just a cheap imitation? It makes a difference to true Pinocchio aficionados, you know...

I'm sorry but the sign is incorrect. I ordered a sign that read "Genuine Faux Designer Watches". Not "Genuine Fake Watches".. Nobody wants to buy a fake watch.

I actually used that stuff for my Senior Project for my engineering degree. it was the material we made the belt for the 'box sorting conveyor' out of.

(I HATED that 'box sorting conveyor' idea, it was already done to death in previous semesters, and I wanted to veto the idea, but the rest of the team outvoted me.)

A lot of people don't like to take chances on the unknown and that why they always chose a road well Traveled... That's why you were out voted.

Fortunately, not everyone is that way or otherwise we all can have cars of many colors as long as it's black.

Re: Caption This for 8/26/16

No, I got outvoted because I was too slow in finding an initial partner for the Senior project team. and the Class Idiot came up to me and said, "are you in a team yet?" and before I could turn and run the Class Moron came up from behind and said "Is this a team?" Then the Class Slacker, the Class Clown, and The Guy Who Should Have Been Expelled For Failing The Same Class Three Times In A Row moved in, fencing me in while all the other teams were finalized, leaving me as the only person with a functioning brain in Omega Squad.

After the teams were recorded, the Project Management teacher called me over after class to let me know I had to take very good attendance records at the extracurricular team meetings, because The Guy Who Should Have Been Expelled is on his last chance, and they needed documented proof that he wasn't participating in the group.

Five braindead bozos (who were ALL 'not really participating' in the thinking) and one halfway intelligent person. The team meetings were more like babysitting sessions than planning sessions. When we had to do the 'feasibility report,' where we were to look at the industry that would most likely use the project and determine the approximate ROI time, I used my observations at UPS (where I was working part-time) to spin the report into showing that the economy is too week for automated box sorting, that human sorters were more economical for the plants at this time, and that the project could not produce an ROI. I closed by recommending that the group be disbanded, and the manpower distributed among the other project groups. The instructor either did not understand my cry for help, or chose to ignore it, advising us to continue as if the project were commercially viable.

When the next semester came around, and it was time to start actually building the project, three of the team members had dropped out; He Who Should Have Been Expelled, the Class Clown, and the Class Idiot. This chopped our effective budget in half. The Class Slacker did prove semi-usefull, as he was able to find two items: the Naugahyde panel (too small to make a coat from, probably the remnant from an order for 'one pair of gloves'), and a mechanical arm from a store display, that used a DC motor to swing an arm back and forth (I had to make solid stops so the arm could be accurately made to 'extend' and 'retract' on cue). The Class Moron was only able to Engineer two things; Delays and Excuses. He never *DID* pay his share of the project cost, and the only parts he found were some ultrasonic sensors for box detection. These were too 'fuzzy' in their response (they were designed for reading when an object approaching along the scan axis was getting 'too close,' not for accurately marking the start and end of a box. I had already said we would need a laser-based sensor to read the box edges, that had been determined in the previous semester), AND he had cut one of the quick-disconnect ends off before he brought it in, so he could show that it could be hooked up to the breadboard. (You don't go 'mangling' a sensor cable just to prove compatibility; of COURSE a QD connection can be converted into a pigtail. You also don't go around mangling components until AFTER you've confirmed the components are right for the project.)

Self-marking as OT for the long "My senior project team SUCKED!" rant.

GA

I had no idea what naugahyde was: a quick google revealed it to be a man made material designed as a replacement for leather, several of their sites seemed to include the slogan "Don't be fooled by imitations." ....So very appropriate to the OP subject.

My inspiration was the beginning title sequence of a US sitcom called WKRP in Cincinnati that was about a struggling radio station. One of their "commercials" said "Don't buy cheap imitations-get genuine Naugahyde!"

No naugas were harmed in the creation of this post.

Since it got used in many places as a cheap leather replacement, including upholstery, it might have been the origin of the snarky phrase, "Who shot the couch?" as a reference to someone walking in wearing a jacket made of Naugahyde. (Later it got expanded to any jacket material that looked tacky enough to have had a former life as a sofa skin.)
