Transport Sector's Carbon Footprint Grows

Posted August 28, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

While U.S. industry has made solid strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the past 25 years, the transportation sector has increased its carbon footprint, say University of Michigan researchers. Industry, still the nation's largest emitter, accounts for about 29% of all emissions. That's down from nearly 36% in 1990. However, transportation — the country's second- largest contributor to greenhouse emissions—increased its share from 24% in 1990 to 27% in 2014. The relative contributions of the commercial, residential and agricultural sectors have also increased since 1990.

This is typical pro-climate change mis-wording of the blurb you see first to get people's attention. If you read the article and study the graphs you will see that transportation is a bigger percentage chunk of the carbon footprint. However, if the actual total foot print is smaller in the latest study, versus the earlier one, then the foot print has NOT grown. They are confusing percent of overall emissions with actual amount increase. NOT THE SAME THING.

Now if they had only done, as I have, and compared percent of carbon emissions at the earlier date versus the current percent of the current over all emissions, and done some simple mathematical multiplying, the actual amount in tons of emissions attributable to transportation is nearly the same. Unfortunately, a title saying transportation emissions have not fallen would not be nearly as impressive as the incorrect title they threw on this article. Come on - where is truth in reporting???

I don't doubt we have a climate change problem, but let's quit with the sensationalism before we anesthetize everyone. Remember the story of "Cry Wolf"?
