I chose a building that I see all the time, I really thought it would not be so easy. Care to give up how you found it so quickly?

Searched 'square high rise stepped facade top' = found Bank of America center Houston

.., thought that was it at first, but not....then searched Bank of America building in images, thought there was a possibility that the same architect was involved, and lo and behold it's on that page down a ways....

As SolarEagle correctly guessed, last week’s building was the Ally Detroit Center. A 2016 press release detailed Ally Financial Inc.’s move into the building and paid homage to the building’s history: “Built in 1993, Ally Detroit Center is known as Detroit and Michigan’s tallest office building. The skyscraper, designed by noted architects John Burgee and Philip Johnson, is a recognizable fixture in the Detroit skyline with its Flemish-inspired neo-gothic spires.”

A book could be written on the career of the eclectic Philip Johnson – and as such, one already has been. He was a public figure who led a life that was described as being full of contradictions, both in his personal affairs and his design style. Johnson was long affiliated with the New York Museum of Modern Art and continued throughout his career to champion change in architecture, moving from modernism to postmodernism, where he incorporated more classical elements into his designs.

While John Burgee served on numerous architectural boards and committees, he is, unfortunately, best remembered for pushing Johnson out of their joint practice, which then succumbed to bankruptcy for unrelated reasons.

The Ally building was constructed just after Philip Johnson’s 1992 break with Johnson Burgee architects, after which Johnson set out on his own.
