These look sort of like shade houses for tobacco plants, or some other form of plant cover. Or maybe a piece of art by Christo when he was just starting out.

Is ginseng an important crop in Canada? I know it's disappearing from the wild down here at a record pace. Reliable commercial sources would help.

Last week’s building was an artist residency in Sinthian, Senegal. Designed by Toshiko Mori Architects, the project was intended as “an exciting new cultural centre” complete with “markets, education, performances, and meetings.”

According to a text description provided by the architects to ArchDaily, the residency planned to welcome artists from around the world. It is the opinion of the architects that “[w]ith this rarely-visited area of the world as their muse, these artists can inspire a greater international appreciation for this part of West Africa.”

The structure itself is composed of bamboo, brick, and thatch, combining traditional materials and techniques with “design innovations by [Toshiko] Mori.” On the firm’s website, they give even more color to the design:

“[A] parametric transformation of the traditional pitched roof is achieved through a process of inversion, inscribing a series of courtyards within the plan of the building and simultaneously creating shaded studio areas around the perimeter of the courtyard. The inversion of the roof also creates an effective strategy for the collection and storage of rainwater in cisterns. With a total footprint of 11,285 square feet, the project is capable of fulfilling substantial domestic and agricultural water needs for the community.”
