In what can only be described as the online dating world breathing a collective sigh of relief that this man is no longer on the market, Akihiko Kondo is finally married…to a hologram.
Inexplicably problematic for Kondo’s mother and virtually all of Kondo’s other relatives, only 40 guests were in attendance at the recent wedding of Kondo and his bride Hatsune Miku, an animated 16-year-old virtual reality singer.
Spending $17,600 on the formal ceremony, Miku and Kondo tied the knot with Miku represented by an anime plush doll…because, why not?
"I never cheated on her, I've always been in love with Miku-san," Kondo said.
"I've been thinking about her every day," Kondo said one week after the wedding.
Luckily, Kondo doesn’t have far to go to see his lady love. Miku is conveniently located in hologram-form, floating, moving and talking to Kondo from a desktop device in his home since March of this year.
"I'm in love with the whole concept of Hatsune Miku but I got married to the Miku of my house," he said, peering at the blue image glowing in the capsule device.
Describing a day in their matrimonial life, Kondo reveals that Miku wakes him up each morning, sending him to his job (for now) as a school administrator. Before arriving home in the evening, Kondo texts his wife, giving her a holographic head’s up so that she can turn on the lights to greet him.
In the evening, Miku tells Kondo it’s time to go to sleep and Kondo sets off for a bed inhabited by a doll version of his hologram wife, because, let’s face it, you can’t cuddle a hologram. Surrounding the plush doll’s wrist is a wedding ring (or restraint cuff) meant to signify their commitment (or to demonstrate a level of crazy that believes a plush doll is capable of flight) to one another.
Though the marriage might not be exactly legal, Gatebox, maker of the device that features Miku, has issued a marriage certificate to certify that Kondo and Miku have wed “beyond dimensions.”
Surprisingly, or not, depending on how much time you spend on the internet, Kondo is not the only hologram lover out there as Gatebox has issued over 3,700 similar “marriage certificates.”
As self-appointed spokesperson for the hologram-loving set, Kondo said: "There must be some people who can't come forward and say they want to hold a wedding. I want to give them a supportive push."
