 You can get instructions to do just about anything from the internet. Need to fix flooring tiles? Need a makeup tutorial? Need to shellac something? YouTube generally has the answers. In fact, YouTube has answers for even the most unusual of scenarios, including whether or not it is possible to survive being swallowed by a whale.
Now anyone who has ever watched the Disney film Pinocchio will tell you that surviving and thus freeing oneself from inside a whale requires only a lit match. That match will catch everything on fire, thus “smoking” out the whale’s insides and forcing the whale to sneeze, which will, naturally, expel you from the whale’s insides by way of its blowhole.
Duh!
Though unlikely that you would find yourself in such a scenario (I don’t know your life), it is possible for a person to fit into the mouth of a whale, so say YouTubers at The Infographics Show who set out to determine if it is possible to survive being swallowed by a whale.
The first concern, according to the team, is to assess the likelihood of being swallowed whole by a whale. The team assumes that to achieve such a feat, the whale would have to be among the largest on earth, namely, the blue whale.
This particular whale can grow to 100 feet in length and weigh up to 400,000 pounds, measurements that would make it possible for the whale to accommodate you along with 400 of your nearest and dearest in its mouth.
Likewise, sperm whales are up to the task: the largest of the toothed whales can grow to 68 feet in length, weighing 112 pounds.
Establishing that a person can indeed fit into the mouth of certain whales — or at the very least, in terms of the toothy whale variety, reduced into manageable human pieces — researchers then turned their attention to whether or not humans could survive in the whale’s digestive system. Spoiler alert: they cannot.
Researchers concluded that humans could not pass through the esophagus of a blue whale. Likewise, assuming that a human manages to survive being ripped apart by the toothy whale, there would be the matter of enzymes breaking down the tissue once swallowed, not to mention the four different stomach chambers, all of which are filled with methane gas.
So in answer to their question, you will not survive being swallowed whole by a whale. But when in doubt, get yourself some matches.
