Convey in a Vacuum

Posted October 28, 2007 7:16 AM

This article conveys details of a linear motor transport system specified for the high vacuum environment of display, optical equipment, and solar cell manufacture. A magnet moves along coils, transporting products through vacuum without mechanical or electrical feedthroughs. Could it work for any process in a vacuum, clean-room, aseptic, or gas-sensitive environment?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Mechanical Power Transmission, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Mechanical Power Transmission today.

We already use manual magnetic manipulators although we are working in a harder vacuum than that quoted in the article (10-9 mbar). This is just an automated version of what we have now so there is no reason that it would not work.

As I see also, the conveyor is another application from a magnetic levitated device or transport system developed by General Atomics, CA. The application as thought by Bosch Rexroth Corp seems to be very complicated and costly just starting with the vacuum. I would see and agree for this technical approach in a reduced areal but what is the gain: the speed, the lifting and carrying capacity or the fanciness?
