A Swell Way to Generate Power

Posted December 08, 2007 8:05 AM

The Archimedes Wave Swing (AWS) will soon be anchored to the seabed and float below the sea surface off the Scottish coast, producing power as it expands and contracts in response to water pressure changes. Testing is expected to confirm that the mechanical simplicity of the AWS relative to surface wave converters translates into low maintenance and reliable performance.

I hope it works and proves to be ecomically successfull. I assume that they are far enough below the surface so that ships wont hit them. Then we have an ideal solution to the over fishing of our oceans as well put lots of them down so that the trawlers cant strip mine the fish schools. They would also act as FADs which would speed up the recovery of the fish stock. Then we will have sustainable non polluting power and food as a bonus

I hope this is not an excuse to putting more shit in the Ocean. Imagining the sort of construction and setting up that has to done, like drilling the Ocean floor to anchor, and possibly changing the Ocean current if there are enough of these things in it. And, possibly the waste energy in form of heat or negative heat that could disrupt ocean ecology. I would like to be optimistic, but there are to many things to consider to a very delicate eco-system such as the ocean. It has suffered enough from us trying to put more stuff in it.
