Asteroid May Hit Mars in Next Month

Posted December 21, 2007 8:48 AM

From Yahoo! News: Science News:

AP - Mars could be in for an asteroid hit. A newly discovered hunk of space rock has a 1 in 75 chance of slamming into the Red Planet on Jan. 30, scientists said Thursday. "These odds are extremely unusual. We frequently work with really long odds when we track ... threatening asteroids," said Steve Chesley, an astronomer with the Near Earth Object Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

1:75 just over a month away? Either a lack of accurate data points or tracking is more primitive than I would have thought.

Huston we have a problem, chaotic system means we could have very little warning for us.

Yes there is a problem...

"A newly discovered hunk of space rock "

That means there is a lack of data points. The new asteroid must be observed as it moves through space (e.g., it must be observed for a significant time) before an accurate orbit can be calculated.

A recent study with a super computer showed the Tunguska event, a super massive explosion in Siberia in 1908, was caused by a SMALLER asteroid than had been previously thought!! That means we need to search for and track smaller asteroids than our current programs are targeting. Yes, this type of a collision is possible on Earth.

As I recall there is still no definitive cause to this event.

Well, all I can say is: Better Mars than Earth.

These things are peppering Earth constantly, fortunately most burn up, without hitting anyone.

Mind you, remember Wolf Creek Crater:

Kind Regards....Sleep well tonight....

This could be a huge opportunity, given what we learned from Schumacher-Levi at Jupiter!
